State Hopefuls Take Track at Regionals

Highland Park will take a strong contingent of athletes to the Class 5A Region II track and field meet this weekend in Arlington, following top-four finishes at the area meet in Carrollton.

The Lady Scots qualified several distance runners for regionals, including Ryan Sontag (800 and 1,600), Maddie Heckler (1,600 and 3,200), Presley Pate (800), Paisley Bassett (3,200), and Finley Heckler (3,200).

Also advancing were Zoya Jordan (300 hurdles), Mary Madison Swail (300 hurdles), Madeleine Denton (long jump), Natalie Hawsey (discus), and Kaylee Schmidt (shot put).

For the HP boys, Jacob Ariyo was the area champion in the high jump. Other regional qualifiers include Frankie Stewart (800), Bennett Blevins (800), and Spencer Haag (1,600).

At the area meet in Mesquite, Hillcrest’s Isaac Dorn won the boys 100 and Jacoby Ogbonna claimed the boys triple jump title. Both will compete at regionals alongside teammate Connor Luce (3,200).

On the girls side, area champions included Hillcrest’s Sydney McGill (400) and W.T. White’s Mia Oliver (3,200). Other girls regional participants for WTW are Christena Adkins (100), Mary Washington (800), Whitney Foster (long jump). Hillcrest’s Hannah Berry (high jump) also advanced.

In 6A Region I, Harlan Beucler of Jesuit Dallas was the top sprinter in both the 100 and 200 at the area meet in Arlington. He is the only individual regional qualifier for the Rangers.
