Araiza, Rangers Slay Dragons in Overtime
Jesuit Dallas has become comfortable working overtime in the boys soccer playoffs. The Rangers kept their season going with a 2-1 win over Southlake Carroll on Tuesday in Prosper.
Clyde Araiza scored the game-winning goal about four minutes into the extra session for Jesuit, which advances to face Mesquite in the Class 6A Division II state semifinals on Saturday.
In a contentious Region I final that featured nine cards, the Rangers (21-1) struck first on a Noah McGough header in the 57th minute, only to see the Dragons (17-4-4) tie the game nine minutes later on a goal by Fife Adeyemo.
Jesuit is back in the state semifinals for the first time since 2017, which was the most recent of its two UIL state titles. It was the second consecutive overtime victory for the Rangers, who knocked off Byron Nelson 2-0 on Tuesday in the regional semifinals.
Meanwhile, Araiza has four postseason goals, including a game-winner against Denton Guyer last week. Jesuit will take a 17-game winning streak into its showdown with the Skeeters (18-3-4), who dispatched rival Mesquite Horn 2-1 in the Region II final on Tuesday.
The winner of that matchup will face either Houston Strake Jesuit or Austin Vandegrift for the state title on April 12 in Georgetown.
