UP City Council to Look at Paid Parking for Snider Plaza
The University Park City Council will consider whether to implement paid parking in Snider Plaza.
The issue is on the agenda for a meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, at City Hall, 3800 University Blvd.
A task force of Snider Plaza merchants, property owners, and nearby residents has recommended paid parking be established for an 18-month trial period in all public spaces in Snider Plaza’s surface lot, along Burleson Park, on Hillcrest Road east, and on a portion of McFarlin Boulevard.
Parking would cost $3 per hour. Four to eight designated 20-minute parking spaces would be installed in each block north/south along Snider Plaza.
Revenue from paid parking would be used to fund offsite parking for Snider Plaza employees. About 230 of Snider Plaza’s parking spaces, or more than half of the 435 available, are used by employees, according to an August 2023 survey. Another 192 employees park in the surrounding neighborhood.
A parking management company would be hired to provide parking enforcement during business hours.
Residents would have the option of purchasing a permit with six months of complimentary parking, followed by annual charges of $50 for each vehicle. A resident parking district would be created in the neighborhood immediately west of Snider Plaza.
The question of paid parking in Snider Plaza is not a new issue for the City Council.
The Snider Plaza Employee Parking Task Force presented its preliminary recommendations at an April 2024 Council meeting. In June, the Council postponed action on those recommendations, which have since been modified based on community input. The Council discussed the issue again at a September special meeting.
