HP Secures Runner-Up Finish in Class B

Highland Park reached the championship game in the Class B bracket, earning a runner-up finish at the Texas High School Lacrosse League state tournament on May 12 in Magnolia.

After three postseason wins, the Scots’ subvarsity Gold team — which was the top seed in the division — fell 9-7 in the title game to Texas Military Institute of San Antonio.

Earlier in the playoffs, HP Gold topped Austin Anderson and San Antonio Alamo Heights before surviving a 9-8 overtime thriller against Lovejoy in the semifinals. Connor McCutchan scored the game-winner.

McCutchan (12 goals, one assist) led the offensive attack for HP during the playoffs, along with Colton Heinlein (nine goals, four assists), and James Allen (three goals, four assists).

Defensively, short-stick defensive midfielder Matthew Park picked up 14 groundballs and caused numerous turnovers, and close defenders Jack Sumner and Mac Dixon picked up 10 groundballs and eight groundballs, respectively.

Walker Fitzgerald saved 58 percent of the shots he faced in goal for the Scots, resulting in a 6.25 goals-against average, and faceoff specialist Owen Laszewski won 61 percent of his draws.

In the Class AA bracket, top-seeded HP lost to Episcopal School of Dallas in the semifinals, ending its quest for a second straight crown.
