Rangers, Knights Advance in Playoffs

The offense might get most of the headlines, but the defense was the standout as Jesuit Dallas won its playoff opener on Friday.

The Rangers shut out Arlington Bowie for the first three quarters of a 20-7 victory in a Class 6A Division II bi-district game at Wilemon Stadium.

Jesuit advances to meet unbeaten Coppell in the Region I area round on Thursday at The Star in Frisco. Coppell put away perennial power Denton Guyer in its bi-district matchup.

The Rangers (8-3) have won five straight games, and have allowed an average of 11.4 points over their last seven outings. Jesuit also has won 10 of its last 11 postseason openers.

Charlie Peters tossed two touchdown passes to Jack Yeskie — an 18-yarder in the first quarter and a 9-yard hookup in the fourth. Noah McGough added a pair of field goals.

Meanwhile, the Jesuit defense made a critical stop on downs at the 11-yard line in the first half, and forced two turnovers after halftime. The Volunteers (8-3) misfired on 22 of 33 pass attempts.

In other playoff action, W.T. White was eliminated in the first round for the fourth consecutive year. The Longhorns were overpowered 49-14 by Frisco Lone Star, the same powerhouse program that eliminated WTW in 2020.

In the first round of the TAPPS Division III playoffs, Covenant upset Colleyville Covenant 31-28 for the second time this season. The Knights (6-4) advance to face defending state champion Dallas Christian on Nov. 17.

Parish Episcopal will open its defense of the TAPPS Division I title on Nov. 17 against Tomball Concordia, which eliminated Trinity Christian in the opening round. The Panthers (7-3), who have won six straight games while averaging 52.1 points, earned a first-round bye.
