SKULDUGGERY OF THE WEEK: CAR CAPER

How easy was it for a crook to drive off in a Mercedes S450 left parked outside Bistro 31 in Highland Park Village before 10:10 p.m. May 8? The car was left unlocked with the keys inside.

HIGHLAND PARK

2 Monday 

A prowler got into a Maserati Ghibli and a Cadillac Escalade in the 3200 block of Drexel Drive, rummage through them, and swiped a $500 pair of sunglasses from the Maserati and a bag containing a MacBook, a checkbook with five checks, and more before 8 a.m.

3 Tuesday

A careless driver hit the left side view mirror of a GMC Sierra pulled over in the 4800 block of Douglas Avenue at 9:40 a.m., causing it to dislodge from its housing, and continued driving without stopping to provide information.

Arrested at 11:31 p.m.: a 42-year-old man for a warrant in the 5700 block of Lomo Alto Drive.

4 Wednesday

Arrested at 1:10 a.m.: a 35 year old accused of possession of a controlled substance in the 4100 block of Lomo Alto Drive.

Reported at 4:19 p.m.: a swindler used information belonging to a man from the 4500 block of N. Versailles Avenue to make a $94 order from Walmart.

5 Thursday

Arrested at 12:30 p.m.: an 18 year old accused of assault in the 3800 block of Beverly Drive.

6 Friday

A driver in an 18-wheeler trying to turn from Fairway Avenue onto Roland Avenue, hit a curb, knocked down a street sign, and left a rut in the easement on the west side of Roland Avenue at 7:45 a.m.

A driver in a Mack box truck hit a low-hanging tree limb in the 3600 block of Beverly Drive, damaging the truck, and dropping the limb into the street before 10:10 a.m.

7 Saturday

Arrested at 2:58 a.m.: a 28-year-old man accused of driving while intoxicated and failing to stop and provide information after hitting an unattended vehicle in the 4200 block of Oak Lawn Avenue.

A reckless driver ran a stop sign, hit the driver’s side of a Volvo S60 as it was traveling through the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Cowper Avenue, and didn’t stop to provide information at 3:42 p.m.

Arrested at 10 p.m.: a 35-year-old man for a warrant in the 4000 block of Normandy Avenue.

8 Sunday

Arrested at 2:01 a.m.: a 32-year-old man accused of driving while intoxicated in the 4200 block of Arcady Avenue.

UNIVERSITY PARK

2 Monday

A thief drove off in a Chevrolet Suburban that was parked in the 3200 block of Villanova Drive at 2:40 p.m.

3 Tuesday

An intruder got into a home in the 3400 block of Rosedale Avenue and took a Microsoft Surface, an iPad, iPhone, an Apple watch, various alcoholic beverages, and more before 3:25 p.m.

A jerk got into a Mercedes GLB250 in the 4000 block of Wentwood Drive and pilfered $10,000 worth of jewelry, a pair of AirPods, $1,000, and more from inside before 4:30 p.m.

4 Wednesday

Reported at 9:56 a.m.: a pilferer picked a firearm from inside a Land Rover in the 8300 block of Preston Center Plaza.

Arrested at 7:07 p.m.: a 29-year-old man for a warrant in the 7000 block of Dickens Avenue.

5 Thursday

A rogue damaged a window of a Dodge Challenger in the 3000 block of Mockingbird Lane before 11:35 p.m.

6 Friday

Lock your car: a ne’er do well took a wallet from inside an unlocked GMC Yukon in the 4000 block of Villanova Drive before 2:22 p.m.

8 Sunday

Arrested at 8 a.m.: a 24-year-old woman accused of public intoxication in the 3500 block of Northwest Parkway

Arrested at 10 p.m.: a 30-year-old woman for a warrant in the 6800 block of Douglas Avenue.

A burglar took a bicycle from a home in the 3400 block of Rankin Avenue before 6:15 p.m.
