The Scots continued their success at the state tennis tournament this week.

Chandler Carter and Elizabeth Porter had to battle more than just the top girls doubles tandems in the state this week at the Class 6A state tennis tournament.

They had to battle the elements in College Station as well, with rain causing numerous delays and court changes. But the HP tandem persevered and claimed the crown on Thursday with a straight-set win over Tiffany Hollebeck and Emily Kim of Plano West.

It is the third spring title for both juniors, and the sixth overall (counting the fall team seasons). Last year, Carter won the 4A girls doubles title, while Porter teamed with Margo Taylor to win in girls doubles. Two years ago, Porter was the 4A singles champ while Carter paired with Nan Porter in doubles.

The pair didn’t drop a set in any of their three matches this week. Carter and Porter opened by defeating Megan Hawkins and Rebekah Moore of San Antonio Reagan in the quarterfinals, then eliminated the sibling tandem of Anna and Lacy Schneemann of San Angelo Central in the semifinals.

The Scots didn’t fare as well in the other brackets in their first spring at the Class 6A level. In mixed doubles, Phillip Quinn and Margo Taylor reached the final before falling in straight sets to Henry Gordon and TJ Fumagalli of New Braunfels.

Elizabeth Tedford lost in the quarterfinals in girls singles to Margorie Antohi of El Paso Coronado in straight sets. And in girls doubles, the second HP team of Logan Lett and Jennifer Mee opened with a three-set defeat against Kristina and Victoria Yu of New Braunfels Canyon.

The Scots have won at least one state title during the spring season every year since 2002.
