SKULDUGGERY OF THE WEEK: Texting + Driving = Crashing
At 9:05 p.m. on Sept. 25, the driver of a white 2012 Cadillac Escalade was texting while driving in the 4200 block of Lakeside Avenue when she hit a tree, then froze with her foot on the gas, traveling on to the sidewalk before hitting a brick wall. The driver was not injured, but the incident caused $2,000 in damage to the wall.
At 12:08 p.m., Brian David Burnett, 44, of San Diego was arrested in the 4500 block of Mockingbird Lane on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
Between 1 and 1:15 p.m., a thief stole a $560 BOB double jogging stroller from a driveway in the 3300 block of Dartmouth Avenue. A babysitter left the stroller in the driveway for a few minutes after having difficulty opening the electric gate in the alley.
At 2:30 p.m., a thief stole a cloth bag containing assorted tools from an unlocked black 2006 Chevrolet pickup belonging to a pool cleaner in the 3200 block of St. Johns Drive.
At 7:36 p.m., a resident of the 4500 block of Belfort Placereported the theft of $116,100 worth of jewelry and $100 in cash from a master bedroom closet sometime since Sept. 22.
At 4:30 p.m., a thief stole a $173 Schwinn boys bicycle from a detached garage in the 4400 block of Westway Avenue. The owner of the bike noticed the perpetrator pedaling down an adjacent alley, but couldn’t catch him.
At 3:40 a.m., the driver of a white 2012 Dodge Ram hit a gray 2001 Volvo S40 and a green 2002 Toyota Sienna, in addition to a brick wall in the 3500 block of Westminster Avenue before fleeing the scene. Moments later, the same Dodge was spotted in the 3200 block of Westminster, where someone rummaged through a silver 2004 Mercedes SL55, although nothing was reported stolen.
Between 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 and 8:20 a.m. on Sept. 22, a thief entered an unlocked black 2006 Acura sedan in the 2900 block of McFarlin Boulevard and stole $2,230 worth of golf equipment.
Between 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 and 8:22 a.m. on Sept. 22, a thief entered an unlocked white 2012 GMC Yukon in the 3100 block of Westminster Avenue and stole child-safety seats, a lug-nut key, and $80 worth of cosmetics, among other items.
At 6:31 p.m., Tracy Lynn Rabey, 49, of Dallas was arrested in the4100 block of Purdue Street on a public intoxication charge.
At 2:28 a.m., Paul David Gleason, 25, of Carrollton was arrested in the 7100 block of Lomo Alto Drive on a public intoxication charge.
Between noon on Sept. 24 and 8 a.m. on Sept. 25, a thief stole a $2,500 MacBook Pro laptop computer at Highland Park High School.
Between midnight and 4 p.m., a thief stole the license plates from a BMW sedan in the 3100 block of Southwestern Boulevard.
Between 5 and 6:18 p.m., a burglar broke into a black 2011 Cadillac SRX in the 3400 block of Villanova Drive and stole a $1,300 Louis Vuitton purse, a $450 Michael Kors wallet, a $300 Tory Burch wallet, a $300 Blackberry phone, a $250 Marc Jacobs handbag, $200 in cash, and $100 worth of toys.
Between 1 and 6:45 p.m., a burglar broke into a white 2002 Lexus 300 in the 4000 block of Normandy Avenue and stole a $50 purse.
Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., a burglar broke into a gray 2010 Land Rover SUV in the 4100 block of Emerson Avenue and stole a $3,800 Louis Vuitton purse, a $400 Louis Vuitton wallet, and $400 in cash.
