SMU vs. Texas Tech Game To Air On FSN SW

Just in from SMU:

The SMU/Texas Tech game will be aired on Fox Sports Southwest Sept. 13 at 6 p.m.

Not sure why this game’s getting airtime, I’ll be shocked if the Mustangs can put up anything against the Red Raiders, but I’m glad I don’t have to drive to Lubbock to catch the game.

By the by, SMU’s home opener against Texas State is tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Ford Stadium.

I’ll be there, will you?

Mitchell, Smith To Fight For SMU Starting Job

True freshman Bo Levi Mitchell and Braden Smith have been tapped as the Nos. 1 and 2 quarterbacks on the Hilltop, head coach June Jones announced today. The two will continue to compete for the starting job as the Mustangs’ Aug. 29 season opener at Rice quickly approaches.

“After going through all of the tapes, I felt like Bo and Braden had a better understanding of the offense,” Jones said in a release. “I think they’re executing a little bit better, so we’re going to give them the reps. We will continue to give the other guys reps too, but those guys will get the focus.”

Seeing Stars at SMU Practice

SMU football practice on Wednesday morning included some perfect weather and the presence of a couple of Dallas Cowboys legends.

Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman and running back Daryl “Moose” Johnston were on hand for about an hour of new new head coach June Jones’ third day of practice. The weather certainly cooperated with temperatures in the mid-80s and a nice breeze.

Although he played at Oklahoma and UCLA, Aikman has become a Mustangs enthusiast.

“I have no ties to the university,” Aikman said, “but with it being in my backyard from where I live, I’m a fan of the school.”

Jones is also an NFL veteran quarterback. He played for the Atlanta Falcons from 1977 to 1981.

Free Screening of Hazing Documentary

A limited number of tickets are available for a free screening of the documentary Hazing, about underage drinking issues, at 9 p.m. Sept. 4 on the North Lawn by Dallas Hall on the SMU campus. Why does an outdoor screening have only a limited number of tickets? I don’t know.

I do know that former People Newspapers Society and Real Estate editor Paige Phelps (pictured on the right, with an unfortunate dye job) won a Mothers Against Drunk Driving Media Award in 2006 for a series of stories she wrote about the Gordie Foundation. Unfortunately those stories pre-date this incarnation of our website, and thus I cannot link to them.

New Football Coach, New Futbol Coach

SMU promoted assistant men’s soccer coach Tim McClements to head coach today.

McClements is the third head coach in the history of the program. He is a former professional soccer player.

SMU Punter Makes Preseason Team

SMU senior punter Thomas Morstead was selected as a first-team pick on the Conference-USA coaches preseason team.

Morstead led the conference and was ninth in the nation last season with a 44.6-yard average. The Mustangs ranked second nationally in net punting last season.

SMU opens the regular season Friday, Aug. 29, at Rice. It will be the first game with June Jones as head coach.

SMU Goes Retro

The SMU athletic department announced uniform changes it hopes will remind fans of the glory days of the Pony Express. (more…)

SMU Football’s Identity Crisis Continues

For the umpteenth time in the last 20 years or so, the SMU football team has changed its uniforms and its helmets.

The Ponies are going back to their traditional white helmets with the red and blue stripes down the middle (good call) similar to what they wore up until 1997. SMU kept the white helmets, but ditched the stripes in 1997. The Ponies went to a navy helmet in 2003.

The new unis are a little different looking, too. Not bad. And I suppose it’s kind of cool that the June Jones era will begin with an entirely different looking team. Especially after a 1-11 year.

SMU’s William B. Stallcup Jr. Passes

This is a few weeks old, but SMU alumnus, and former professor and administrator William B. Stallcup Jr. passed away June 7 at his home in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico.

Stallcup is probably best known for serving the university as president ad interim immediately following the NCAA death penalty. (more…)

Re:SMU, You May Want to Call Your Lawyers

The comment-posting Overheardian “Tri Delta Lady” already said this, but the Mustang Realty pony doesn’t face the same way as the SMU one. The SMU mustang faces right. The Ford mustang points left,

And by the way, poster “JC,” you’re wrong about SMU taking the logo from Ford. They took it from us. [Sorry, it's a .pdf, but scroll down or search "Ford Mustang" in the document, you'll get the story]

Also, I don’t think SMU will be putting its lawyer pants on to fight Mustang Realty, they’re a pretty big athletics sponsor at the school.

SMU, You May Want to Call Your Lawyers

Staff writer Josh Hixson shared this shot of Mustang Realty Group’s new signs. Note the pony logo on the left side. Is this infringement on SMU’s trademark? They’re the new agents selling the house of John Harris. You know, this guy.

<Putting on publisher’s hat> And Mustang Realty, you’re welcome to advertise your fine company in the pages of People Newspapers anytime. You might just want to rethink that logo.

UPDATE: Erroneous information in an earlier draft of this blog was corrected.

Breaking News: SMU Athletes Can Read

From our good friends at Southern Methodist University:

The SMU Athletic Department and the University Park Library will host a “Story Time With The Mustangs” on Tuesday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the U.P. City Library near the corner of Hillcrest and Daniel. SMU’s DeMyron Martin, Thomas Morstead, Emmanuel Sanders and Andrew Galloway will read stories and sign autographs for the children in attendance.

Sorry for the late notice, if anyone wanted to attend, but I just received this release a few minutes ago myself.

SMU Sets Times for ‘08 Home FB Games

SMU has announced kickoff times for this year’s six home games. The first four on Sept. 6 and 20, and Oct. 11, and 18 will start at 7 p.m. The games on Nov. 8 [Homecoming] and 29 will start at 2 p.m. (more…)

Re:Mockingbird as a Toll Road

Not only will tolling Mockingbird drive thru traffic onto the side streets, but what about students at SMU, who use Mockingbird to get to the Highland Park Village, get to and from campus, etc? Any plans that would not toll residents should, in all fairness, include SMU students. Like it or not, they’re part of the community.

I wholeheartedly disagree with HP town engineer Meran Dadgostar when he says this idea merits consideration. This is probably one of the worst things town leaders could do from a PR standpoint. They need to kill this idea ASAP.

A Chick-Fil-A Rookie No More

I haven’t been to the Chick-Fil-A in Hillcrest Village yet. But I went to the one just north of Southwestern on the 75 access road for lunch today. The double-lane drive through was backed up onto the access road, and there were at least 50 folks eating inside.

What is the deal with Chick-Fil-A’s popularity? It was a good meal — better than I expected. But it’s still fast food. Can someone tell me what the big deal with this chain is? I’m about ready to invest in the company based on what I see at that location every day. It was busy until 1:50 inside, and still had 10 cars in the drive through well after the standard lunch hours.

Today in the Park Cities

It’s a busy day, the last day of school before the summer:

  1. Armstrong Elementary is having their field day at 9 a.m. I don’t remember getting a field day on the last day of school in elementary. Our special treat was getting to stay inside and watch movies. Remember when movies were only watched on VHS? Do today’s elementary school kids know of a time before DVDs?
  2. UP Elementary fourth-graders are graduating at 12:30 p.m. Whatever that means.
  3. Merritt says she’ll be too busy to blog because she’ll be at the fourth-grade graduation. Whatever that means.
  4. The real graduation is taking place at Moody Coliseum, as the Highland Park High School seniors walk across the stage before retiring to Dallas Country Club for an all-night party. Let us hope no golf carts end up in the creek.
