Even though they did not end up pitching against each other, former Highland Park hurlers Chris Young and Clayton Kershaw did both pitch in games involving their teams, the Padres and Dodgers, this week in Los Angeles.

Kershaw threw last night, notching his third win after taking a no-hitter into the fifth. He gave up three earned runs in seven innings of work in an 8-4 victory. The Dodgers, who are vying to win the NL West with Arizona, are going for the three-game series sweep tonight. Young took the loss in the series opener on Monday.

The teams play again next Monday-Wednesday in San Diego, but it doesn’t appear as though the former Scots will face each other in that series either.

College football polls before October are dumb. Just my opinion. Georgia starts the season out as the No. 1 team in the country. Former Highland Park quarterback Matthew Stafford throws for a career-high 275 yards in three quarters in a 45-21 over Georgia Southern. What happens? Georgia falls to No. 2.

Granted, beating Georgia Southern handily is no big deal for a team like the Bulldogs. And, sure, USC, the new No. 1 in both the Associated Press and coaches’ polls, did impressively whip Virginia, 52-7, on the road. Still, being number one, winning a game, and then dropping in the polls is just plain dumb. That’s like when teams with almost even records play each other, and the team that wins ends up still ranked lower than the team it beat. Adios, common sense.

Anyway, Stafford and Company host Central Michigan on Saturday. Maybe if they win big enough, they’ll drop to three.

I know that’s an insane statement, especially when, less than 10 years ago, I remember seeing gas for .77 cents a gallon. But after purchasing a gas-guzzling pickup (at a very, very good price) a month ago, I couldn’t be happier to see gas drop about .60 cents.

Keep on falling!

However, that will be the only time the Scots will be heard on that frequency this season. The rest of the year, HP football games will be on KFXR 1190-AM. There will also be a pregame show 30 minutes prior to each of those contests.

The Scots are vying to become the first program in Texas to win 700 games, which they can accomplish with a win over the Hawks.

What you may not know is Highland Park officers are giving offenders a warning this week only, while University Park officers have already issued 32 tickets (over the 2.5 days since school started) to drivers talking on their cell phones in a school zone, according to officials from both police departments.

Last year both departments wrote well over three hundred tickets a piece (HP wrote 395 from December to May, 2007 while UP wrote 332 from January to May last year, according to both departments).

UPDATE: The tickets come with a $75 fine, $11 of which goes to the city (the rest goes to the state), according to HPPD.

Highland Park looked solid in its only scrimmage at Plano West on Friday night at Clark Stadium.

The teams ran 50 plays each, followed by two quarters of running clock. The Wolves scored two touchdowns in the first portion of the scrimmage, while HP got a touchdown and a field goal. However, the Scots dominated the running clock portion, outscoring Plano West 17-0. HP’s first-team defense did not allow a point the whole night.

“Plano West has got lots of talent, so if you can keep them out of the end zone for a scrimmage like this, that’s a good sign,” HP head coach Randy Allen said. “I feel pretty good about it.”

The Scots scored two rushing touchdowns and a defensive TD. Matt Bonano also kicked a 33-yard field goal.
