As you may have noticed, the police departments of University Park and Highland Park are out this week actively patrolling the cities’ school zones for drivers talking on their cell phones and other traffic-related violations.
What you may not know is Highland Park officers are giving offenders a warning this week only, while University Park officers have already issued 32 tickets (over the 2.5 days since school started) to drivers talking on their cell phones in a school zone, according to officials from both police departments.
Don’t suppose you want to tell us where you got this scoop? It sounds familiar.
Highland Park looked solid in its only scrimmage at Plano West on Friday night at Clark Stadium.
The teams ran 50 plays each, followed by two quarters of running clock. The Wolves scored two touchdowns in the first portion of the scrimmage, while HP got a touchdown and a field goal. However, the Scots dominated the running clock portion, outscoring Plano West 17-0. HP’s first-team defense did not allow a point the whole night.
“Plano West has got lots of talent, so if you can keep them out of the end zone for a scrimmage like this, that’s a good sign,” HP head coach Randy Allen said. “I feel pretty good about it.”
The Scots scored two rushing touchdowns and a defensive TD. Matt Bonano also kicked a 33-yard field goal.
The Highland Park Lady Scots had an incredible weekend of volleyball at the Justin Northwest Tournament.
Not only did HP win the whole shebang, the Lady Scots went unbeaten in seven matches and in all 14 games they played. Two of those wins came against state-ranked Hereford, including one in the championship match, which vaulted HP to No. 1 in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association’s Class 4A state poll.
The Lady Scots (10-4) host a dual match against McKinney Boyd and Flower Mound Marcus at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Our kind and talented society editor, Tierney Kaufman, just informed me she has to trek to the municipal court of HP at 1:30 p.m. today just because she wants to take defensive driving for a ticket she got going down Armstrong Avenue a few weeks ago.
Is that right? You can only ask HP to let you take defensive driving at an appointed time? You can’t just drop by the old town hall any old time to get permission?
The Highland Park volleyball team has arguably played one of the toughest schedules in the state so far in the young volleyball season. And the Lady Scots certainly won’t get a break this weekend.
In its first six matches of the season, HP (3-4) has taken on four state-ranked teams, including two that were in last year’s Class 5A state tournament. Although they played all of the ranked teams close, the Lady Scots lost to Lake Highlands (No. 1 in 5A), Austin Westlake (No. 3 in 5A), Plano West (No. 8 in 5A) and Red Oak (No. 4 in 4A).
HP, which is ranked No. 6 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s state 4A poll, will face at least one more ranked team in the Justin Northwest Tournament today and Saturday. The Lady Scots play Hereford (No. 3 in 4A) in pool play at 3:15 p.m. Canyon Randall, the state’s top-ranked 4A team, is also in the tourney.
The Highland Park football team will be doing what it has done nearly every single August for the last decade on Friday night — scrimmage Plano West.
The Scots and Wolves will square off at Clark Stadium. The junior varsity will go at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7:30. The scrimmage is the only one for both teams, which will open the season in the Tom Landry Classic one week from Saturday.
Plano West will take on perennial powerhouse Southlake Carroll at 4:30 p.m. HP will then tangle with Red Oak.
Merritt, you want to attend this class too?

Ever wondered where the delicious steaks at Al Biernat’s come from? I’ll tell you.
I saw the truck pull up to the restaurant as I pulled into Overheard HQ this morning.
The Chicago-based butcher has been in the business for more than 40 years, and is the exclusive provider of “Premium Gold Angus Beef.”
While Meats by Linz is the butcher of choice for Stephan Pyles, Tillman’s Roadhouse, Lola, and Nick and Sam’s, it doesn’t look like individuals can just call Linz up and order a couple steaks and have them delivered to their home.
This story from Aug. 8 discussed the request for signs, which Highland Park apparently did give the OK to shortly after.
The preseason accolades just keep on piling up for the University of Georgia and Highland Park ex Matthew Stafford.
The Associated Press recently tabbed the Bulldogs as the preseason No. 1 team in the nation. This guy doesn’t think Georgia can win it all, especially in light of the season-ending injury to left tackle Trinton Sturdivant. That loss will be tough to overcome, but perhaps even tougher for Georgia will be trying to live up to all of the preseason hype.
Has anyone seen Laura Bush’s entourage around the Park Cities today? She made a last minute reservation and dined at Stephan Pyles last night. I’m wondering if she was back in town for another round of house hunting today. Usually Candy Evans is first to share this news, but I have not seen anything today. Overheardians, what is the word on the street?
The Dallas Morning News released its preseason Class 4A area poll in today’s edition with Highland Park ranked No. 1.
Although the Scots return only three starters, HP went 15-1 last season and nearly won the program’s fourth state title and second in three years. Four teams on HP’s schedule this season are also ranked — No. 4 Rockwall, No. 8 Rockwall-Heath, No. 12 Red Oak and No. 18 Royse City.
The rest of the top 20 is: 2. Everman, 3. Carter, 5. Mansfield Timberview, 6. Denton Ryan, 7. South Oak Cliff, 9. Lincoln, 10. West Mesquite, 11. Fort Worth Southwest, 13. McKinney, 14. Lancaster, 15. Ennis, 16. Waxahachie, 17. Kimball, 19. Frisco, 20. Lake Dallas.
Ex-Scot Clayton Kershaw will try to improve to 3-3 on the season for the Los Angeles Dodgers as they host the Philadelphia Phillies at 9:10 p.m.
The 20-year-old left-hander is coming off an impressive outing in which he picked up his second win. In that game, Kershaw went seven innings and gave up just one run against St. Louis. He has a 3.37 ERA.
Kershaw faces Cole Hamels (9-8. 3.35 ERA).
Former Highland Par
k quarterback Matthew Stafford is on one of five regional covers for Sports Illustrtated’s College Football Preview, which is on newsstands this week.
Stafford is pictured with Georgia teammtes Knowshon Moreno and Dannell Ellerbe. The magazine tabbed the Bulldogs as the No. 1 team in the nation to open the season.
The other four covers, which also feature a trio of teammates, are of the other four schools in SI’s top five — Ohio State, Florida, USC and Missouri.
With the season opener against Red Oak a mere 19 days away, the Highland Park Scots opened football practice Monday morning at Highlander Stadium.
Head coach Randy Allen was pleased with what he saw from the roughly 145 players who reported for practice.
“I thought they reported in good condition and they seemed to retain a lot from the spring,” Allen said. “We put everything on them and they remembered it.”
The Scots will practice without shoulder pads until Friday. Allen said they will have an intrasquad scrimmage at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. HP, which went 15-1 last season, will also scrimmage at Plano West on Aug. 22. The Scots will then try to become the first team in Texas high school football history to win 700 games when they face the Hawks in the Tom Landry Classic on Aug. 30 at SMU.
I’ve complained about the town of Highland Park’s website several times before. So it’s only fair that I praise them for the spanking new website they launched yesterday. It’s far more functional.
Though there are no council agendas up yet, there certainly promises to be.
Get caught speeding in HP? Who hasn’t? Pay your fine here.
Didn’t know that the history of Highland Park began with a “savage Indian battle?”
Want to find out the latest on the Mockingbird Lane redo? Well, that feature doesn’t seem to work yet, so keep going here.
Anyway, it’s a nice start for the town. Let us hope it is as well-maintained as it is attractive.
Former Highland Park quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Georgia Bulldogs have been ranked as the top team in the nation in the USA Today preseason coaches’ poll, which was released Friday.
Georgia won its last seven games last season, including a 41-10 whipping of Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. This is the first time the Bulldogs have ever been ranked No. 1 in a preseason poll.
Georgia opens the season on Aug. 30 at home against Georgia Southern. Five of the Bulldogs’ eight Southeastern Conference games are on the road. Georgia also has to go to Arizona State for a non-conference game on Sept. 20.
Other than his Major League debut, ex-Scot Clayton Kershaw is in for probably his most exciting start for the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight in Tinseltown.
Not only will Kershaw (1-3) be taking on future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson (8-7), but he will also have some more pop in the lineup supporting him as Manny Ramirez makes his debut with the Dodgers.
Ramirez came to L.A. from Boston in a three-team trade that also involved Pittsburgh. Kershaw is coming off his first win in the bigs.
Former Highland Park wide receiver Seth Gardner put the finishing touches on his high school career with a touchdown in last night’s Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game last night at San Antonio’s Alamodome.
Gardner, an Arkansas baseball signee, helped the North team rally for a dramatic 16-15 win over the South. He caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from former Southlake Carroll quarterback Riley Dodge, who is headed to North Texas to play for dad Todd, with 1:38 left in the game.
The North scored another touchdown 14 seconds later and added a field goal with 25 seconds left for the win. Gardner had six catches for 77 yards.
So first the Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi starts hitting again, after he grows a mustache. Yankees fans have embraced it.
Now comes this photo (at left) featuring three of the big names down at Highland Park Town Hall. On the left is town secretary James Fisher. In the center is the newly hired town administrator Bill Lindley. On the right is outgoing, longtime town administrator George Patterson. They’re laughing it up at the Monday ceremony during which Lindley signed his new contract. What do they all have in common? That’s right. (You can also see intrepid reporter Cassie Clark in the back, talking to the mayor. But she doesn’t have any facial hair, at last report.)
I’ve thought you could only pull off the lip fur if you’re Magnum. But I’m beginning to think that I’ve been wrong.
Anyway, photo caption contest in the comments below: Example: “My town pension plan includes free mustache combs for life.”
Ex-Scot Chris Young will make his first start for the San Diego Padres since May 21 tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
First pitch is set for 9:05 p.m. at Petco Park.
Young suffered a broken nose when he took a line drive off the bat of Albert Pujols more than two months ago.
Former Highland Park wide receiver Seth Gardner will be playing for the North team in tonight’s Texas High School Coaches Association’s all-star football game at San Antonio’s Alamodome.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Southwest.
Gardner, who caught 73 passes for 1,491 yards and 21 touchdowns for the 15-1 Scots last season, will wear No. 86. Gardner is headed to the University of Arkansas to play baseball.
There are also four SMU signees playing in the game: Rockwall QB Braden Smith, Prosper TE Taylor Thompson, Plano OL Blake McJunkin for the North and Cuero RB/CB Quincey Whittington for the South.
