Re The Wall: UP Responds

I received this pleasant and professional email from Steve Mace, the Community Information Officer for the City of University Park, regarding my posting about The Wall.

Chicken on the Lam: UPDATE

Have we been Punk’d?

Randy [Millican of HP police] said he checked with dispatch and animal control - no one knew anything about it! He said if it was one of the other dispatchers that he hadn’t talked to, then they must not have thought that it rose to the level of a report, because they don’t have any paperwork on it. He said about 10 years ago, as a prank, someone dumped some chickens in a yard. But that’s the last time he heard of chickens in HP.

Scots’ Tennis Rolls On

Just got a call from sports editor Chuck Cox, who in back in his old haunts in Denton today covering the Region II-4A Tennis Championships. As usual, the Scots dominated the brackets, and will send four doubles teams to Austin in 10 days for the UIL Championships.

Hopefully some of the Scots will face some New Braunfels athletes at state and get a little payback. It was New Braunfels that ended HP’S 111-match win streak in team tennis, beating the Scots in the state final last fall.

Leaf Blower Lands UP Resident in Jail

The author of the leaf-blower e-mail message wrote in today to explain her side of the story following our publication of a police report (scroll down to April 8 ) about her arrest for assaulting an officer. Gather your friends and family around folks. This is one wild ride:

You chose to publish my name in the police report for allegedly assaulting a police officer. In view of my ordeal on April 7th and 8th at the hands of our public servants, it’s imperative that I give my side of the story to your paper. In failing to mention that the UP police were called to investigate a noise complaint, your account misrepresents the case and presents only the more sensational aspects of the story.

Chicken on the Lam

I just returned from a meeting out of the office to find this message in my inbox:

chicken.jpg

When you walk out your front door on Sunday morning on Crescent Avenue, you do not expect to see a chicken. That was the case on Sunday, April 20.  When the police station was contacted to see if someone had reported losing a chicken.  The dispatcher laughed and said they had been trying to catch the chicken for three days to no avail.  Chickens are not very easily caught,  only returning to their roost at night.  Springtime will be on this hen’s side for survival, with all the bugs and water available.  She was last seen clucking her way down the side walk, watching carefully for the early morning dog walkers.

Disarming The Boss

Well, I can tell papers are hitting lawns across the Park Cities because my inbox is filling up quickly. Until today I have responded to every reader e-mail. But now I’ll have to resort to this system.

If you sent hate mail, this is for you:

What Do Charles Geilich, Long Whang and Jeff Duffey Have in Common?

I just noticed that the most popular post of the month on that handy list to your right is The Face of Charles Geilich. Nothing personal Charles but that concerns me since it’s already April 24th. So I took a look at the most popular over the last 30 days and it still ranks number 3.

Take a look for yourself. Jeff Duffey and Long Whang aren’t far behind Geilich. What does this say about our nearly 8000 unique monthly visitors?

Purse Snatcher Didn’t Get This Parkie

This e-mail has been forwarded to me this morning by several ladies hoping to get the word out:

I had a really scary thing happen to me and I wanted to pass on a word of warning to please be very aware of your surrondings. Today in broad daylight, I parked my car right by the front door of Rex’s Seafood on Lovers and Inwood. Upon entering the parking lot I noticed another car coming in which looked out of place. As I parked and proceeded to walk literally about 12 feet to the front door I also noticed a figure coming up quickly behind me. Before I knew it he grabbed me from behind and tried to grab my wallet. I screamed my head off and started throwing elbows and luckily he ran away. I am fine and he got away with nothing. However, they seemed to have a well thought out “plan” and I wanted to warn everyone.
