I hate to stir up controversy (especially when it’s not really related to the Park Cities), BUT how about that BCS? Just kidding. I’m not a huge fan of the system, but for once, it worked out in OU’s favor. Now I’m just hoping they’re able to continue to the big game and maybe not live up to a certain name they’ve had deemed upon them in past years.

“I’m not a huge fan of the system, but for once, it worked out in OU’s favor.”

For once it worked out in OU’s favor? Either you don’t follow college football or you’re forgetting 2003 when Kansas State beat OU in the Big 12 Championship Game. Despite that loss, OU still went to play for the national championship (only to get pounded).

OU is one school that can’t have any complaints about the BCS system.

Ok, so I could list a million things here about why this is so messed up (45-35) and how the Big 12 is the only conference out of the big 6 where OU would have beat UT in tiebreakers or how I’ve already seen UT beat both of the teams who are now playing for the Big 12 Championship this year or how when handed a chance for a National Championship title UT has won and OU has dropped the ball the last 2 chances, but I’ll just echo Josh with a “Go Tigers.”

    JS,

Don’t forget 2004 when OU got picked over Auburn and ended up losing miserably to USC. Including this year, that makes OU 3 for 4 when it comes to the BCS bailing out OU. The only time they didn’t get any love was 2007 when LSU got picked to play Ohio State for the National Championship. I believe OU went on to get pounded by West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl shortly thereafter.

I just don’t know why the voters love OU so much. Any time they advance on votes, they get pummeled in their bowl game.

I have been reading alot of commentary about why Texas deserves to be in the Big 12 Championship. Lots of good reasons and some lame reasons. But to suggest that UT is a better choice to go to the Nat’l Championship because they have closed the deal by winning their last chance at the national title is the lamest.

I seem to recall a huge outcry for Mack Brown’s job back in 2004 when he went bowl-less for the 6th consecutive season. The fact that UT has gone to 4 consecutive bowls and won each one belies those 6 years of not going at all. During 5 of those 6 years Bob Stoops took his team to a bowl. Stoops has his own problem with winning bowl games but that is not the question.

OU won and UT didn’t. Man-up.

    James,
I’m missing the point here. OU has gone to 6 BCS Bowl games since the inception of the BCS. They’ve lost 4 of them. UT has gone to 2 BCS Bowl games and won both. While it’s true that has nothing to do with this season, historically the voters seem to think that OU is better than they actually are in some years.

In focusing on this season only, we should direct our attention to the 2 teams playing for the Big 12 Championship (we beat them both already, btw) and to the ridiculous Big 12 tie breaking standards. All of the other top conferences have tie breakers that would deem UT the winner. I’m not saying they’re any more right, but 5 out of 6 seems to be an overwhelming majority. The Big 12 needs to revisit this thing in the off-season and I’ll just have to bite my tongue for the rest of 2008-09.

For the record, I felt cheated in the Presidential Election of 2000, but not nearly as much as I did around 4 o’clock yesterday. You can screw with my country, our economy, heck, the world, but please, please, please don’t eff with my College Football.

They are following the rules that the Big 12 adopted by consent of the AD’s of each school.

Do you feel cheated now, as in Florida in 2000, because rules weren’t bent to allow your team to win?

I am a playoff fan myself. I don’t think any rule changes are going to have a big enough impact to satisfy me.

The only problem is that the rules essentially came down to a subjective vote in some cases.

As to the playoff system, sounds good in theory, but could never be put into place without changing the regular season, which will never happen based on the financial gains of many schools. And even with playoffs, there’d be a lot of debating about which teams make it to the top 8/12/16. Plus, the playoffs would take away much more from the regular season than they would add to the end, in my opinion.

And yes, I feel cheated because rules weren’t bent allowing my team to win. I thought that was so clearly and very seriously stated in all of my posts above.

I’d like to think of UT & Tech as martyrs this year and hope that the Big 12 looks at their sacrifices as a reason to maybe re-shape the rules in case 3 teams in the top 10 were ever in this situation again. Again, very seriously…

Why is Bob Stoops like marijuana?

Because they both get smoked in bowls.

Thank you very much - I am here until Thursday.

James Tucker, you are completely wrong when you say Mack Brown didn’t take Texas to a bowl game for 6 consecutive years. Texas has been to a bowl game EVERY SINGLE YEAR THAT HE’S BEEN AT UT!! This is his 11th season at Texas and he’s 7-3 in bowl games.

And for you to say OU won, Texas didn’t…uhhh, Texas did win and OU lost 45-35.

bc, I forgot about ‘04 when OU went instead of Auburn (an undefeated Auburn team).

  • James Tucker

    JS,

OU has a date in Kansas City next week and all UT can do is pull for Missouri. OU wins the Big 12 South.

I apologize for not being specific. Mack Brown and the Longhorns missed BCS bowl opportunities during the first 6 years of his tenure (For which he was excoriated for). The last 4 years have only yielded 2 BCS bowl opportunities. How many have the Sooners been to during Mack Brown’s tenure? 6

    James,

And yet they’ve won the same amount of BCS Bowl games!!!

Also, just read a great article about the current computer rankings making it possible that if OU wins in KC, we might have a UT-OU rematch in the National Championship. Doubtful, but apparently the computers don’t care much for Florida or Alabama…

  • James Tucker

An OU/UT rematch would be sweet. We can only hope.

  • JS

I still have no clue as to why you think the # of BCS games that OU and UT have been to in the past should factor in to who goes to the Big 12 Championship Game. Ironically, they both have the same # of BCS bowl game wins, yet OU has lost 4 and UT hasn’t lost any. FWIW, UT is practically assured of going to a BCS game this year.
