I’ll Drive Slower, I Swear

I’ve been working here in the south end of Highland Park for just over three weeks, and I’ve yet to be pulled over by HP’s finest. But I just had a close call as I returned from lunch. An HP DPS SUV [acronym overload!] was hiding parked in an alley on Wycliff/Fitzhugh just as I sped over from Central Expressway on my way back to the office. I either slowed down just in time, or the officer had mercy on me. Anybody else been asked to produce their license and registration lately?

Someone should have warned you. That area has always been a target, although in ALL the years I’ve lived in the area I have NEVER seen the HP pull over anyone who “looks” like they live around there, if you get my drift.

But you should always go slow, and ALWAYS stop at the four-way stop signs down on Fitzhugh/Turtle Creek. The alley behind the church is the other place they like to sit.

Dude, you just jinxed yourself. I’ve had to produce my paperwork a time or two. Three days after I got my new car, I was pulled over by HPPD. I didn’t receive a ticket, thankfully, but the officer dropped his gigantical flashlight on my brand new car door and dented it. :( I think I would have rather gotten a ticket.

I used to live right there (by the hole in Turtle Creek), and the HP police would literally park in a resident’s driveway and wait for people to run the stop sign at Fitzhugh/St.Johns. As to who they pull over, I would agree that there probably weren’t a high percentage of HP residents pulled over, but the % of drivers at that intersection who are HP residents is also very low.

It is a MYTH that the HP and UP police don’t pull over or give tickets to residents. If you speed or run stop signs, you get pulled over. I now drive 30 mph (Not even 33) and make long full stops at stop signs. No ticket in 7 years.

Another target is the 4-way stop as Abbott meets Armstrong, because the police cars can “hide” on the dead end leading to the Katy Trail. Better stop completely.

I wish there were a place for police to hide next to the 3-way stop at Knox and Abbott and catch the many Abbott drivers going south who don’t yield when it is Knox’s turn.

Also watch out on Preston Rd between Beverly and Armstrong. Could be one of the most heavily patrolled stretches of road in the US. They hide behind the azaleas on Arcady and Bordeaux and the alleys on the east side. No 5 mph grace here either. Got my first ticket there from HP’s finest 25 years ago.

I just got a ticket as we speak on the access road of 75 right before McCommas. They were hiding by the HP Animal clinic…don’t they have anything better to do than sit around and pull over drivers like solve crimes?

I’ve learned to not even think about speeding on the access road there below 75 and Mockingbird. Probably 50% of the time I drive that stretch there are motorcycle cops handing out tickets. And it’s tough, because there is usually some HP mom in a big SUV or crazed SMU student on my a** mad because I’m driving so slow.
