Thanks, Principal Gilbert

Please allow me to give kudos to Hyer Principal Jeremy Gilbert.  Among the great work Principal Gilbert has already done in his first year at Hyer, there is one little gesture he makes every day that really has an impact on the kids.  Each morning, as parents pull up to the curb in the carpool line, Mr. Gilbert is there to open car doors and greet the children, and the parents.  Sometimes he’s in front, sometimes at the back entrances, and always with a smile, and, on a rainy day like yesterday, with an umbrella.

I know my carpool kids look forward to seeing him, and it’s a great way to get to know the students.  My recollection of my own elementary school principal was of an unsmiling man secreted in a mysterious place called “the office.”  Brrr.

Back in the day at Armstrong Elementary, Dr. Thomas greeted students at the door every morning. He knew each student by name, I swear by the first day of school. He was the best, I am in my 30’s and still remember his warm smile fondly. Kudos to Mr. Gilbert for making the effort to reach the kids.

You’ll never see Dr. McNutt at Bradfield working carpool.
I think that’s fantastic that he’s out there. Maybe it will keep some of the handicap parkers in line.

Mr. Gilbert is hands-down the single greatest improvement, even if he’s one-tenth as good as we’re seeing out of the gate, as his predecessor. Not only does he greet the children and already calls them by name, he is integrally involved with the parents and their wishes for improvement and opportunity that were brushed off by the prior principal. Every parent I have spoken with feels he is sincere and believes they are important. Welcome Jeremy!!!! Oh, and Gig ‘Em!

Easy, CG. Have you ever thought that maybe she was in surgery?

  • CG

She was in surgery for SEVEN years? (That’s how long I was a parent at Bradfield.)

Dr. = Surgery. I guess that joke was a reach. My fault.

Glad to know she’s not been ill–I was feeling a little guilty. I do get the joke now :)

Mr. Gilbert is an enormous improvement over his predecessor. I too love the “meet and greet” in the morning. My daughter, a Hyer 3rd grader, says “Mr. Gilbert is a great principle because he always sits with me at lunch”. He also reads to the children in class. My 5th grader even noticed the difference when he visited recently. He is extremely approachable and remembers names. Plus the school is cleaner than it has been in the past five years. Keep up the great work!
