I was out of town last Friday when I received the following message commenting on our newspaper’s endorsement of Barack Obama to become the next president of the United States. It was sent anonymously, so it won’t appear in the print product. Sorry for the delay in sharing:
For the last several years, many of my friends have told me they’ve stopped reading that “rag” called the Park Cities People since Wick Allison took over. I’ve continued my subscription because I like to read about what’s going on in the community. But your editorial today endorsing Obama has caused me to agree with others that your paper no longer is worthy of my money. Like many, you have fallen under the Obama spell & have been swayed by smooth talking language of a socialist, disguised as a statesman. So what if some consevatives have failed us, taking our country in the radical direction Obama will lead us in will be disastrous. If nothing else, his Supreme court appointments & other judicial selections will se t back conservatism decades a the appointments of Carter & Clinton have done. Go ahead, endorse Obama, but when the government begins to také over every aspect of our lives, maybe even what you can print in your paper, don’t come back with an editorial crying about lost freedoms. Make no mistake, whatever has led you to think highly of B..O.n it will go down the drain as his inexperience & weakness will be exploited by Pelosi & Reid as they foam at the mouth thinking of the government controls & socialist programs they can implement with puppet Obama in the White House. How gullible & naive you are.
Pretty well put.
Why would PCP feel a need to endorse a presidential candidate in the first place?
One of our owners, Wick Allison, felt the need to, and so we did. You are correct that we do not generally make candidate endorsements.
What’s wrong with a newspaper, any newspaper, endorsing a candidate?
Um, this comes after eight years of a republican adminstration that has taken a few freedoms under the guise of national security. Then again I guess the Patroit Act & FISA mean nothing to this reader.
GO OBAMA!
“His Supreme court appointments & other judicial selections will set back conservatism decades as the appointments of Carter & Clinton have done”…you think so? It’s certainly my most fervent hope in regards to this election.
I am a closeted Obama supporter myself…
Those freedoms you are so concerned about are what enables us to share ideas and respect other people’s differing opinion. If you’d like to shut out and shut down all those who disagree with you, then you’re not only headed for socialism, you’re headed for a dictatorship. Democracy DEPENDS on people who disagree with each other. So why are you so angry? That’s what so great about America: the fact that we have two active parties who keep each other in check. Wick Allison isn’t the only person in the country who disagrees with you. In fact, about 48 percent disagree with you. Are you going to shut out half of America? Stop talking to 150 million people? Keep your subscription. The key to our government is healthy debate.
If I quit subscribing to a periodical every time it presented or endorsed an opinion I didn’t like, I would have nothing to read but Highlights.
An educated society like ours will contain a spectrum of views on just about every issue from the mundane (trash pickup) to more complex issues like religion and foreign policy. The existence of different views makes us a healthy society and makes us different than countries where dissent is not tolerated, such as China and the Soviet Union.
If anyone is interested in the stifling of free speech they only have to google the fairness doctrine. Papers like this one who have opted to get on the bandwagon with Obama will be okay, but I fear for other outlets and medias. I think that if we enter the “Age of Obama”, as Gwen Ifill puts it, we will see a real curtailing of our constitutional rights as Maximum Leader does what he can to Alinsky (yes I am using that name as a verb) this country.
My Bad. After further investigation I realized that The Park Cities People didn’t actually come out and endorse Obama thru their editorial board. They just REPRINTED the tired article that he ran in D Magazine last month that was discussed and dissected in this blog here
http://blog.peoplenewspapers.c...../#comments.
You would have thought that he would have been able string together something unique for this paper.
Wick Allison is a member of our editorial board.
Did James Tucker forget to take his meds today?
No meds. Please clarify your questions about my posts and I will be glad to defend my remarks.
Cassie - another great freedon we have in this country is to ‘vote’ our pocketbook. Everytime I choose to spend $ I am essentially voting “for” a product or service. Just as Mr. Allison has the freedom to voice his opinion in PCP, I have the freedom to choose to not pay him for his opinion. There are plenty of free media outlets that will offer his same opinion.
How ridiculous it sounds to unsubscribe to a paper based on one man’s opinion once that you may not agree with… each week you get great news coverage that discusses the events and people of the community you have chosen to live in. Do you unsubscribe or not buy the wall street journal or other publications b/c they have opinons that don’t reflect the way you feel? I agree with sharpay and cassie. there are 52 issues and you have an “issue’ with one, so you are don? fight, don’t flight.
