Little Parkies Love Vampires? Yikes!

There’s a lot of buzz around this teen romance series by Stephenie Meyer. I wanted to know what the craze was all about and why so many Parkie tweens are carrying these novels around like accessories. So I read the first one, Twilight, and because I really got into the twisted world of a normal teenager falling in love with a vampire, I read the second one- New Moon. And now, just so I can tell other parents exactly why I think kids should be a minimum of 16 or 17 before reading these, I’m going to buy the third one today. And I’m hooked, that’s another reason I must have the next one in my hands before the clock strikes midnight.

There is no sexual content (so far) or any obviously inappropriate material at first glance but I’m super concerned about young girls reading the books for other reasons. Anyone read these and know what I’m talking about?

The idea that my daughter may someday date a vampire is just one more reason I can give her not to date at all. I mean, why take the chance?

An adult Overheardian just sent this and I now I feel better about being addicted:

“How bizarre that I picked up Twilight just last week and have really enjoyed it so far! I was at Barnes and Nobles and told this cute lady I LOVED Harry Potter and the series has ruined all other books for me. She recommended Twilight and said it was “mainly a young teenage girl book” but a lot of people seem to like it and the series. So far, I’m really liking it but I’m ashamed to tell people I’m reading it.”

About to finish ‘New Moon’ and I think its great. Would like to see Meyer ‘heat it up’ a bit in the next few books. Seems unrealistic that they aren’t pawing at each other more often - I mean they are juniors and seniors in high school. Don’t you all remember what you were doing back in the day?

  • Charles Geilich

Yep, Nick, that cinches it for me.

I think the real answer is to postpone puberty until age 39 or so.

Lucky for you, the film version of Twilight is coming out this fall.

    Charles,

When the Bristol Palin is pregnant news came out I polled some of my 17-18 year old male relatives and or aquaintances about it. My main question was whether the fact that both parents can kill and field dress a variety of wild animals, have guns at their disposal and one of them is the commander of both the state police and the National Guard would deter them in any way from engaging in “heating it up” and or pawing at each other. It might have been the machismo but to a man none of them were concerned with aboutit.

    We are dead meat.

Imagine if the boys at MIS had these books on the track!

Meyer is a good Mormon wife. She won’t write about teens “pawing it up.” She’ll just write about vampires. (Has your pastor accused her of ruining America, Merritt?)

I’m reading them also and won’t let my 5th-grader do so for another year, most likely. Contrarian is correct that the author is a practicing Mormon. Probably for that reason, these books are technically “clean” of sexual content and references to drugs and alcohol. On the flip side, there is a LOT of unrequited lust and sexual chemistry between the 2 main characters. They only share kisses but it’s pretty obvious that they would prefer to be doing something more. More worrisome is that in our heroine’s pursuit of her vampire sweetheart, she engages in quite a bit of dishonesty with her father. Lastly, I think she’s a real doormat and lets herself be led and/or bossed around by her boyfriend constantly. That’s really my concern with these books. They are fun reads but my girl needs to be a little more mature before she can enjoy these books for the adventures they offer and dismiss them for the life lessons they do not.
