Scots 49, Rockwall 39, Final

Highland Park wins another wild one. More to come.

Scots Taking Control

Highland Park scored the first 14 points of the second half to take a 42-20 lead.
The Scots now lead 42-26 at the end of three. Luke Woodley has thrown five touchdowns.

Woodley’s Numbers

At the break, HP quarterback Luke Woodley is 16-of-21 for 265 yards and three touchdowns.
Pretty impressive stuff from the junior who is in his first year as the varsity starter.

Deja Vu at Highlander

Highland Park is at it again.
One week after winning a 46-43 shootout against Royse City, the Scots find themselves involved in another one.
At the half, HP finds itself nursing a 28-20 lead. Scots quarterback Luke Woodley has been awesome. He has thrown three touchdowns and rushed for another one on HP’s first four possessions of the game.
The Scots get the ball first in the second half.

What Are You Going To Be For Halloween?

What are you going to be for Halloween? The kids too, what are they?

Blue Wave Engulfs Pearce

The Highland Park swimming and diving team had little trouble disposing of rival Pearce on Tuesday at HP Natatorium.

The Blue Wave won 18 of 22 events, as the boys won, 114-55, and the girls rolled to a 122-48 victory. Junior Allison Arnold won the 50 and 200 freestyles, while senior Fernando Lara won the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.

Also winning events for HP were: Delaney Rolfe (200 IM), Katie Streepey (100 butterfly), Hannah Ferrin (100 free), Tanner Harris (100 backstroke), Bolton Harris (100 breaststroke), Paul Gerard (50 free), Mark Faubian (100 free), Jenks White (100 back), and Easton Sinclair (100 breast).

The relay teams also combined to win five events.

The Blue Wave will be at The Woodlands Invitational one week from Saturday.

Lady Scots Win Rockwall Fall Invitational

The Highland Park girls golf team won the Rockwall High School Fall Invitational on Oct. 22.

The Lady Scots finished with a 331, 32 strokes better than second-place Sachse. Rockwall “White” was third with 398, followed by Rockwall-Heath with 434, Rockwall “Orange” with 459, and Garland Naaman Forest with no score.

Callie Scheffler led the way for HP with a second-place finish. She shot a 78. Steffi Scholer was third with an 80, Kendall Anigian was fourth with an 85, and Erin DeLorenzo was fifth with an 88.

Crew Team Brings Home Medals From Austin

The Highland Park crew team had a big day in Austin on Oct. 25.

The Scots won gold medals in the Men’s Junior Novice 4x (Tag Chiles, Lars Jacquemetton, Brady Britten, and Bill Smylie), and in the Parent/Child 2X (David and Pat Hamner) at the “Pumpkinhead” Head of the Colorado Regatta.

HP also brought home silver medals in the Men’s Junior 1x (Chris Powers), the Women’s Junior Lightweight 1x (Lauren Pepe), the Men’s Junior Lightweight 4+ (Max Caywood, Britten, Chris Powers, Craig Theibaud, and Tiffany Work (coxswain)), and the Women’s Junior 4+ (Sarah Baldwin, Savannah Smith, Brooke Koonsman, Ashley Corrigan, and Adriana Cervantes (coxswain)).

The Scots also won four more silvers and three bronze medals in the novice division.

HP will be back on the water  Saturday and Sunday in Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Head of the Chattahoochee, the largest regatta in the south.

Not So Fast, Dan

Our esteemed managing editor’s report of me being out of town is, well, wrong.

I was out of town yesterday, but I’m back today. I will be blogging live from the Highland Park-Rockwall football game at Highlander Stadium tonight.

The Scots (8-0, 5-0) are closing in on a fourth straight undefeated regular season. However, a showdown against Rockwall-Heath (8-0, 5-0) looms next Thursday night in Rockwall.

BTW, chief photographer Chris McGathey and I just ate at Wild About Harry’s (shameless plug). Awesome, as usual.

UP Annual Pumpkin Walk

It’s quite creative and scarey out here!

Hellooooo? [Grand Canyon-like Echo]

Halloween is not shaping up to be a very lively day on this little old blog.

Krista Nightengale is out of the office on assignment.

Chuck Cox is out of town.

Tierney Kaufman and Josh Hixson are both out sick.

And Austin Kilgore is just off. I mean, he has the day off. The dude’s always slightly off.

Abbott Park Gets a Gift

Terry Webster had a story that we couldn’t fit in the print edition of Park Cities People today. It’s about Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Olyan making a huge donation for playground equipment at Abbott Park.

Coffee Table Need Some Sprucing?

If your table’s a little bare, or you just happen to know someone with a fantastic garden, I know of the perfect gift - Leading Residential Landscape Professional. This book showcases some of the work of Lambert’s and some of the gardens in Park Cities and Preston Hollow.

It retails for $39.95 and you can order one by calling 214-350-8350.

Too bad I’ll never, ever have a garden showcased in a book. I lack a certain green thumb.

Josh and Austin are dressed alike, again. And Josh asked me to make my photos a bit smaller. How’s this Josh? Does that work for ya?

What We’re YouTubing Today

I’m starting a new blog feature today. Many times our crack team of ace reporters has some down time between interviews and story writing. Sometimes we just feel the need to express ourselves through song and video. So we YouTube.

And now, I’m going to start posting the videos that we’re YouTubing that day, with a short explanation of why we’re watching it.

Lady Scots Play Monday

Highland Park’s volleyball team will open the Class 4A state playoffs against Frisco Centennial at 7 p.m. Monday at Carrollton Creekview.

One Last Kim Gatlin Quote

The Park Cities author sure is getting a lot of coverage about her book (which hits stores tomorrow). Tomorrow’s society section will also feature an article about Gatlin, but as I mentioned before, some jewels were left out of the print issue.

Here is yet another comment by the spunky mother:

People who say to me, ‘You know — Good Christian Bitches — don’t you think that’s [pushing it] kind of far?’ And I say, ‘I don’t think a whole lot of the term ‘pedophile priest’ either, but that doesn’t make it any less real.

Moms Say Their Kids Have ‘Date Night’ Planned

According to the two women I overheard while waiting in line to vote at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on Park Lane this morning, their children are “too cute” as a couple.

The mothers, who initially were standing separated in the line, came together when they saw one another and immediately began to share information about the plans made between young J. and S. for Halloween night.

Word on the street is that S. said that, upon reminding J. that Friday night is Halloween, he suggested they go to dinner and then go trick-or-treating. “I just love J. He’s so much fun,” was how S. described her reaction to the suggestion.

The second mother confirmed the plans of the young couple, explaining that when she’d asked J. his plans for Halloween, he’d said it was “date night.”

The two women had a good chuckle about how “cute” it all was and how great their children are together.

Editor’s Note: I share this because I find that I’m flashing back to my own high school days, and I find the idea of my mother having such a conversation with the mother of one of my high school girlfriends truly horrifying. (Which is also why I decided to use only the initials of the poor kids. They’re just innocent victims here.)

HPISD Teaches Students What To Do if a Drunk Picks Them Up

My 2nd grader came home with an interesting lesson yesterday. Sadly, it’s necessary for HPISD to teach what to do if riding in the car with a driver under the influence of alcohol.

1. Sit in the back.
2. Buckle up tight.
3. Put everything on the floor.
4. Don’t bother the driver.
5. Tell a trusted adult about the ride.

My daughter explained that the example was “like an uncle with a brain messed up on alcohol.” I was thinking it’s more likely to be a drunk mom in the carpool line. Ijs.

Cough Syrup Overdose Rumors are Flying, HPISD Tight Lipped

I’ve been overwhelmed with inquiries concerning the latest rumor, something about a cough syrup abuse/overdose incident at HPMS. I checked in with Helen Williams at HPISD and her answer was not a surpise (I love you Helen, you’re just doing your job).

Re: A Night at The Bridge

Merritt,

You must be reading my mind. Next week’s school section is all about community service. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I easily get stuck in my day-to-day routines and forget about the needs that are out there. There’s nothing like a fourth grader telling you why it’s so blatantly obvious that people need help or listening to a seventh grader talk about how the economy is making people suffer to make one think, I need to help out.

I’d love to go with you next time. And check out next week’s school section to hear more from these great kids!

A Night at The Bridge Serving Dinner to the Homeless

Last night was eye opening, necessary and actually quite fun. I want to do it again and I hope some of you will join me.

From left, my friends Katy Black (experienced volunteer at The Bridge) and Ginger Porter. Katy is modeling the bright green leather coat (price tags still in tact) that Ginger never got around to wearing and brought to donate to The Bridge. (more…)

Pugliese Named HP Homecoming Queen

Big ups to Highland Park volleyball player Laurel Pugliese, who was named the school’s homecoming queen on Saturday night.

Pugliese, a 5-11 senior middle hitter, is doing just as well on the volleyball court this season as she did on the homecoming court. Pugliese and her Lady Scots teammates wrapped up the regular season on Tuesday night with a 25-9, 25-10, 25-15 victory over Greenville.

HP (33-8, 12-2) finished in second place in District 10-4A. Heading into the playoffs, the Lady Scots have won five straight matches - all sweeps.

HP has made it to the regional semifinals each of the last two seasons, losing to Waco Midway in that round both times.

My Wallet Suddenly Feels Lighter

I’m mentioning this here because it happened just outside the Highland Park town limits.

A Dallas County constable stepped in front of my car this morning on Blackburn Avenue and ticketed me for going 30 mph in a 20 mph school zone. (What school? North Dallas High, I guess.)

As Larry Powell used to say in the Morning News, that Highland Park price? $235 [cough, cough].
