Lady Scots Bounce Back With Wins

After losing to rival Pearce in their second District 10-4A match last Tuesday, the Highland Park Lady Scots volleyball team has gotten right back on track with a pair of sweeps.

HP (24-7, 3-1) took care of Rockwall-Heath on Friday, 25-16, 25-11, 25-13, and then disposed of Carrollton R.L. Turner, 25-6, 25-10, 25-13, Tuesday night.

Against the Lady Lions, who are winless in district play, Katherine Culwell had five digs and eight kills. Also for the Lady Scots, Laurel Pugliese had five aces and five kills. Margeaux Mendenhall added seven kills.

The Lady Scots, ranked No. 5 in the state, will play at Carrollton Newman Smith Friday and at Royse City next Tuesday.

Next, We’ll Practice Escaping From Airplanes

Rumor has it that HPHS practiced their evacuations today on school buses that they don’t actually have or use.  The school rented buses to sit outside the school, where students could board them, then practice escaping from them.  Just in case they ever have them.  Buses, that is.  Which they don’t have.

Hyer Lords of the Dance = YouTube Gold

This little nugget of YouTube gold may have been filmed in May, but that shouldn’t stop you from laughing as these fourth grade dads as they perform their version of Riverdance called “Lords of the Dance” at Parents’ Skit Night at Hyer Elementary. Jump for the video. (more…)

Cindy Crawford, How About Some Kuby’s?

Hi Merrit–I’d like to offer a one-on-one interview with supermodel, mother, and home-style expert Cindy Crawford. Cindy is launching her new Cindy Crawford Colors collection at the Grapevine location of Rooms To Go on Friday, October 3. Cindy can talk about what’s hot in furniture right now, as well as her new colors collection, where you can mix and match between multiple colors and furniture sets. She can also highlight her top choices for fall furniture trends, talk about kid-friendly pieces and more.

Please let me know if you have any questions, or if you would like to schedule an interview.

Thanks,

Melissa

I have to go to the UP Bike Rodeo on October 3rd. Can Cindy Crawford come somewhere in the Park Cities, maybe Kuby’s? I’d love to talk furniture with her over a cup of coffee but closer to home and right after the bike stunt show. Melissa, can she do that?

Would You Like Some Fowl With That?

If you’re developer Braden Power then the answer is yes. Get a peek inside Power’s 7,900-square-foot home on the banks of Turtle Creek courtesy of real estate editor Austin Kilgore. In the article Power also answers the pressing questions, ‘Why do you like fowl with that?’ and ‘How do you save a stranded swan?’

Scoop Without the Casseroles?

This comment from an Overheardian makes me wonder.

my school’s PTA wants all of us to email them with our “joys and concerns” — things like getting engaged, a new baby, divorce, illness, troubling times, loss of a loved one. And to encourage uninhibited communication, they promise to keep all joys and concerns private.

OK, I’m not bashing it right away but I’ll be honest, I’m leaning in that direction. I mean, if they’re going to keep it private, why do they need to know about it? I can see them asking for the “joys” so they can send casseroles over but why the “concerns” if it’s private?

Next Up For Scots: Newman Smith

The Highland Park football team will open District 10-4A play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Carrollton Newman Smith.

On paper, it looks to be a very long night for the Trojans, who dropped down from Class 5A this year. Newman Smith is 0-3 on the season with losses to Denton Guyer (31-14), Keller Central (42-28), and Irving (24-9). The Trojans have scored just seven touchdowns in three games.

The Scots, meanwhile, are a perfect 3-0 and are ranked No. 3 in the Associated Press’ Class 4A state poll. HP scored eight touchdowns in its last game, a 57-41 win over Coppell.

This is the third meeting between the schools. The Scots won both of the first two, 21-14 (2000), and 60-7 (2001).

I Need a NorthPark Update

When my wife was pregnant, she and I walked a lap around NorthPark almost every day. Since our son was born 10 days ago, she’s barely left the house, much less visited Dallas’ favorite upscale mall. So I’m wondering if any Parkies can tell me if that bridge near the Mavericks’ pro shop (or any other bridge) is still closed for repairs. My wife and I noticed large cracks in the flooring before that bridge was blocked off. Anyone else wary of visiting NorthPark’s relatively new second level?
