I’ll Follow The Rules, But I’ll Also Flip The Bird

Some reader feedback to today’s column. Thank you for the great e-mails!

MIS carpool is a scary place. I have only done it once, and will never go back. Last year was my oldest child’s first day of fifth grade. As we drove up smiling with first day nerves, this dad pulls through the main section of High School honking his horn, veins literally bulging from his neck, with children still in the car!!!  Nobody could figure out what they were doing wrong. I’m pretty sure  our mere existence was the problem. I was seriously scared of him. He was driving an SUV, the sports car must have been in for a service. (more…)

Have a Laugh For Life

Staff photographer Christina Barany took this gem of a photo portrait this week for a story about a comedy fundraiser at the Lakewood Theatre to raise money for cancer research in the name of a young University Park boy. (The event is at 8 p.m. Wednesday, for those interested.)

Of course, this story from last year (third photo down the page) still contains my favorite photo I’ve ever seen Christina take for us. Outstanding.

More Football News . . .

Thanks to the 7th grade sports chairs who are proud Overheardians, I have scores from the 7th grade football games as well.  The Red team dominated McKinney Cockrill with a 34-to-zippo win at home. Pierce Weiss was the leading scorer with three TDs. Caslon Mullen and Cameron Kimzey also brought the ball home with one TD each.

The Gold team also looked great Wednesday night as they tied the Cowboys 20-20.  Sam Wilson, Robert Meneke and Cole Feigl scored TDs.  Congratulations to both teams!

As always, thanks to the coaches and parent volunteers who help coordinate this effort.

Wick Allison for Obama

Our brother in ink (or at least digital letters), Wick Allison,  Editor-in-Chief of D Magazine, wrote this editorial expressing his support for Barack Obama.  Wick posits that the Republican Party that has veered away from its principles, and calls Sen. Obama “almost the ideal candidate” for this moment in American history.  I urge you to read and consider the article, and make up your own mind.

Dear Baylor Bear,

Dear Baylor Bear in the Navigator,

Please stop blocking both the west bound traffic flow and the available parking spaces at U.P. Elementary while dropping your sweet child off at school. We all know what you’re trying to do. You’re making sure that no one can pass you in the driving lane so that you can hop right back in without having to wait to back out of a space or merge with traffic. If you think we don’t get it or that we’re not keeping track, think again sister.
