Sarah Palin = Ultimate Volamom

While I’m no Sarah Palin expert, it’s not hard to imagine her as a Park Cities volamom. She projects that kind of image. She doesn’t shy away from her PTA president to vice presidential candidate success story. This led me and others in our newsroom to thinking: Is she the ultimate volamom?

Discuss.

Palin Does Dallas

Word on the Interwebs is that Alaskan Governor/Hockey Mom/Sportscaster/Republican Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin will be hosting a lunch fundraiser at the Fairmont Hotel this Friday. Tickets are going for a cool thou. If you don’t have the cash, then there is a cheaper option here.

I’m sure there will be plenty of Parkies in attendance. So, if you’re going to the Palin Party as a paid guest…or a protester, hit us up in the comments section. In light of recent Wall Street events there is now a nominal fee of $10 per comment or 25 cents a character, whichever generates more revenue.

Bonus Question: What’s the most expensive meal in the Park Cities you’ve ever paid for?

Thus Moms are Back

Remember the thing about using the word “thus” in regular conversation? It’s starting again. It’s a major deal in this one particular group.

I hope the head Thus Mom doesn’t read the blog. But I feel certain that she does, starting today.

The F-Bomber’s Fate, Will I Tell His Parents?

I was thinking we had kind of jumped the shark but the e-mails are still coming in asking if I’m going to turn F-Bomber in to his parents.

The answer is no, I’m not throwing him under the bus for the following reasons:

  1. Though lame and only further proved the original point of what a punk he is, he did make a technical apology. Shame on me for not placing more rules around the apology that would get him off the hook.
  2. Readers are right, his parents are probably the role models for such behavior and wouldn’t care one bit. They might even be proud of his independent, confident thinking.
  3. I’m quite honestly tired of the kid.

The feedback to this column has given me renewed faith that the majority of Parkie parents would not put up with such behavior from their children. That’s what I needed to know.

Your Wi-Fi Exposed

One of my favorite parts of life as an iPhone user is the little box that pops up labeled ”Select a Wi-Fi Network.” It’s interesting because it lists the various networks you are near and they all have little nicknames.

One network near the intersection of Lovers and Preston is called TheThinMan. And oddly, while sitting at a stop light near SMU, the phone asks me if I’d like to log on to the TCU network. Not far from there I noticed one called GeishaLover.

What’s your network name?

Bailout

Technically, the economic crisis may not be a local issue, but only if you also believe 9/11 wasn’t local.  Some issues transcend locality, and this is one of them.  As Congress today failed to pass a bailout bill, several questions come to my mind, and I’d like to hear what others are thinking.

For example,

Pete Sessions Rocks The Bailout Vote

While many Texas Republicans in the House of Representatives voted against the $700 billion plan to bail out an ailing economy (15 against, 4 in favor), Pete Sessions voted in favor of the plan. Even with Poker Pete’s help, the vote still failed 228 to 205, according to The New York Times.

The stock market seems to think the failed House vote is a bad thing.

What do you think?

Update: Any financial experts with a serious opinion on the matter can offer their interpretation of today’s events via e-mail. We’ll sift through ‘em and post as space allows.

Loss Drops Georgia in Polls

As expected, Georgia fell significantly in the polls following Saturday’s 41-30 loss to Alabama.

Matthew Stafford and Company are now ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press poll and No. 10 in the USA Today poll.

The Bulldogs (4-1, 1-1) will have a week off to prepare for their next game, which is an Oct. 11 home contest against Tennessee.

Against the Crimson Tide, which is now No. 2 in the AP poll, Stafford was 24-of-42 for 274 yards with two touchdowns and his first interception of the season.

Time to be a Part of the Stoneleigh’s History

The newly renovated Stoneleigh Hotel and Spa is reaching out to past guests and visitors for the hotel’s 85th birthday. Guests are asked to submit their favorite Stoneleigh moment for a chance to win a grand prize weekend package or one of five second-place prizes.

If it was the evening of your debutante ball, a wedding proposal, or just a plain wonderful weekend, write about it and send it to the judges. I’d send my memories, but they all include fraternity parties in the penthouse… Not exactly prize-winning material.

Henk Returns to Practice

Highland Park head football coach Randy Allen said inside linebacker Murphey Henk returned to practice on Monday after suffering an ankle injury in the Scots’ 52-14 drubbing of Carrollton Newman Smith last Thursday at Standridge Stadium.

Henk (6-0, 200, Sr.) should be good to go for Friday’s District 10-4A home game against Greenville at Highlander Stadium. The Scots are 4-0 overall, 1-0 in district.

Henk led the Scots in tackles against the Trojans with 14.

The People vs F-Bomb Teen

Following Merritt’s post, that included a back-handed apology from our lovable little F-Bomber, we’ve had a slight surge in voting. (more…)

HPHS English Class Needs Some Help

The jury is still out on whether or not the F-Bomber’s reply counts as a real apology.

However, it does provide a great segue into the world of grammar:

The F-Bomber may not be the finest example of a HPHS education, but in my humble opinion you are only as strong as your weakest link. It’s a great case study on today’s young, technologically savvy, and well -educated Parkie. Bad manners + technology = bad grammar.

Discuss, defend, debate, debunk…

The F-Bomber Responds

The response we’ve been waiting for is in. Technically this is an apology. Really it’s everything but.

I didn’t even write that email it was my friend on my iphone but since your going to threaten to “Tell my parents” ill waste 10 minutes of my day to respond to this stupid confrontation. Im 18 years of age, and if you think my parents will care if i told someone to f*** off then your really out of your mind. I find it flattering that you honestly went out of your way to write some blog on it, so thank you for that. i personally told my mom and she was laughing hysterically I guess im not as young as you thought I would be and my parents would ground me, again I apologize. I think I will be the bigger person here and tell you that I am sorry that we had this scuffle happen, it was unnessesary and immature on both of our parts I think you would agree. I am sorry I offended you but to write a blog and threaten is a little more extreme than a four letter word, but I sincerely am sorry for this it will not happen again

So you see, it’s my fault.

Monday Mid-Morning F-Bomb Vote Update

Friends of the F-Bomber need to start hitting the polls immediately. F0F-Bs should excuse themselves from class now and make a b-line to the computer lab or utilize their iPhones because 163 Overheardians believe Merritt should forward his e-mail to his parents. On the flip side 30 voters believe Merritt should forgive and forget. Decide amongst yaselves.

Has This Happened to You? Park Cities YMCA Member Wants to Know

Hmmm. Not much of an intro needed for this, just in from an Overheardian.

While working out with my husband at the Park Cities YMCA recently we had a horrible experience and want to know if this has happened to others.  While on the elliptical machines there was a younger (20ish) man on a machine in between us.  Throughout our 30-minute workout, the young man continuously farted…silent, deadly, noxious clouds, again and again and again.  I exchanged desperate glances over his head with my spouse. We gagged and fought for breath. Afterward, my husband said he was repulsed almost to the point of having words with the tooter and felt that the young man had just let it rip for the heck of it.  Has this happened to anyone else?

Dr. Henry Heimlich Does Not Approve This Message

If the cinematic version (with the same name) comes even close to the literary masterpiece that is Chuck Palahniuk’s Choke, then this movie is definitely worth watching. I haven’t gotten a chance to see it yet (read it years ago), but our fearless publisher Jason Heid did. Read his review here. Then watch the trailer below. If you like the movie, then do yourself one better and read the book. Why? Well, Palahniuk’s protagonists (Fight Club) are always great narrorators and that doesn’t always come through on the silver screen.

Fried Fun at the Fair

Ah, the first day of the Fair, when the grease is fresh and the new cars still smell like new cars.  Here are a few photos to remind you of how good it is.  Please notice that the turkey leg has stunned our model into submission and left mustard on his chin.

Celebrity Sighting at The Joule

While Danny DeVito was spotted at the W, Joey Fatone of ’NSync and Dancing With Stars fame, was seen partying at The Joule. Last night was night one of two, yes two (2), over-the-top grand opening parties planned by Todd Fiscus and his Todd Events team.  Overheardians snapped photos of the ‘NSync-er and were later overheard discussing Justin Timberlake’s possible attendance at tonight’s celebrity black tie soiree.   Does anyone have a Joey story or photo from last night?

If you are one of the lucky hundred few attending tonight’s event, a section of Main Street is blocked off to manage the valet process. You must show your valet card to enter the police guarded entrance at Main and Akard. I give props to whomever orchestrated that part of the event, as it was the smoothest valet process and shortest line I’ve seen in years.  More details on last night’s event to come…

Scots Just Keep on Streaking

The Highland Park football program doesn’t care much for losing.

With Thursday’s 52-14 victory over Carrollton Newman Smith to open District 10-4A play, the Scots kept some impressive winning streaks alive and kicking.

HP (4-0, 1-0) has now won 42 straight regular-season games and 40 consecutive district games. The last regular-season loss for the Scots was a 21-18 setback to Denton Ryan to open the 2004 season. HP’s last district loss was a 47-44 triple overtime loss to Pearce in 2001.

When Greenville comes calling next Friday at Highlander Stadium, the Scots will put those streaks on the line, along with their 50-game home winning streak. HP’s last home loss was a 24-22 setback against Denison in — are you ready for this? — 1998. The Scots have been perfect at home for nearly a decade. Wow.

Also, head coach Randy Allen is one win away from being 100 games over .500 at HP. With the Newman Smith win, he improved to 110-11. He has never lost a home game as head coach of the Scots. Wow again.

Re: Rock The F-Bomb Vote

If you’re keeping score at home, or the office, on Merritt’s F-Bomb vote: It’s 83 to 10 in favor of outing the F-Bomber. Those Overheardians who have already voted here can rock the F-Bomb Vote by telling their friends to participate in our poll. The poll closes Monday at 5 p.m., so don’t wait and remember… “Now you know and knowing is half the battle.”

Overheard Now More iPhone Friendly

For all you loyal Overheardians packin’ an iPhone you’ll be happy to know we have a new, more iPhone friendly format for our mobile blog readers. Tell us what you think about it: Hit up the comments section or feel free to send me an e-mail.

Celebrity Sighting

And no, it’s not Tony Romo, or Jessica Simpson, or the Jonas brothers.

I wanted to be sure to let you know that Danny DeVito was spotted lounging at W Dallas-Victory’s Living Room Bar last night. He was seen drinking Belvedere and snacking on a cheese assortment.

I wonder how if the Taxi star is really 5-feet tall? Anyone see him?

Are Your Feet Killing You?
