Here’s what I’ve got today:
- An Overheardian wants the scoop on area dog breeders.
- Another Overheardian has noticed an increase in the number of tiny lizards in the Park Cities this summer.
- A bunch of people are e-mailing me about another e-mail that’s being forwarded all over town about my post yesterday. Thanks for your support, stay sweet like me.
An Overheardian chimes in on #1:
Hey, Merritt,
Don’t know what context it was in, but if the Overheardian is looking for a purebreed, let me strongly suggest they go to petfinder.org. You can search by ANY breed, and most likely there is one in the area in a shelter/rescue group.
I’m not trying to sound preachy, but I live next to the Katy Trail , and we’ve had more than our fair share of dogs dumped here. Plus, Dallas euthanized 27,000+ animals last year. Nobody needs to buy a puppy.
Oops. That was MUCH more soap boxy than I ever intended.
Oh, the Overheardian I mentioned in #1 above isn’t looking for breeders, she’s looking for a dog trainer. Oops, sorry!
And regarding #3 — the email about Merritt’s post yesterday. I received it and was very disappointed that some one would send a rallying cry throughout the neighborhood against allowing a person, a citizen, a parent, a columnist to participate in a civic leadership activity. That email suggests that some people maybe aren’t “good enough” to participate and that those that have gone before are somehow better and more worthy of the opportunity to learn more about civic leadership.
I think E Pluribus Unum includes everyone, doesn’t it? Can we get a judges ruling here?
The Overheardian is in the process of adopting a dog with a deep American heritage (aka a mutt) from a rescue group. Does anyone know a dog trainer who is good with dogs as well as kids? (Kids are housebroken but could use some training on working with the dog to prevent mass chaos in our household.) I’ve found that many dog trainers are “dog people” but not “kid people”.
Regarding a dog trainer…Nancy at Park Cities Obedience School
also regarding number 3
can only imagine the rhetoric in the email, haven’t seen it.
but, Kersten,
there is no problem in “allowing a person, a citizen, a parent, a columnist to participate in a civic leadership activity” and in fact it should be encouraged.
And there is no problem in having a journalist observer on a governing board .., in fact it should be encouraged.
But when the two are (even, perhaps, kiddingly) muddled:
“Column. Material. Jason, this is my formal request for the $125 tuition fee. If you’ll pay I’ll start drafting my answer to this application question:”
then there could be an issue.
these are two distinct, valuable, separate roles. confusing them may at times be a dis-service to each in turn, and to the folks you serve.
or is this too serious a view on governance in the park cities?
