Craig Civale: Copy Cat?

Yesterday, Yahoo posted this story by Consumer Reports on how to cut your spending by $500 a month. Then, during one of last night’s WFAA broadcasts, senior reporter Craig Civale filed this report. I can only imagine how this went down at WFAA HQ…

Hmm, it’s a slow news day, what’s poppin’ on the Internet? Oh, here’s a story I can easily copy and make it seem like I did it all by myself. Instead of sourcing the story I found online, I’ll just say “experts” make these recommendations, and it will sound more official, like I did my own work.

I’m not saying reporters don’t cover many of the same things, or maybe even cover the same trends, I get that. But this is nothing more than blatant plagiarism. Unfortunately, this sort of thing happens all the time in broadcast journalism, and it mostly goes unnoticed.

I wonder if the people that do this think that we don’t know what they’re doing. I’m sure everyone who saw Craig’s story didn’t necessarily see the original online, and vice versa.

But I saw it Craig, and I know.

The same story was in Monday’s DMN. I was watching the news last night and saw the same story again. I thought it was pretty pathetic.

I disagree with your complaint. The graphic clearly attributes “Consumer Reports” as the source. And for non-surfers, this was probably a good piece to watch. I think you are picking on Craig because his head is shaped like a square.

    I loved Craig’s story…I thought it was very helpful…
Austin Kilgore…not quite sure what your talking about? what’s the problem with someone talking about budgeting…some people don’t spend all day and night on the internet like you do…they actually have lives…and I’m sure it was helpful for the viewers…
Austin, you need to relax and read more!
