Camp Ozark or Bust. Or Both.

Tomorrow, my wife and I make the trek into Arkansas Territory (is it a state?) to retrieve our 10-year-old from Camp Ozark.  I’m sure many of you Overheardians are veterans of this journey.  Any advice for rookies, other than to make sure my iPod is full?

    What route are you taking?

  • Chris

I spent many summers at Camp Ozark (GO CADDO) and it was tons of fun. Can’t believe that you are even asking if Arkansas is a state I hope it is in jest but you never know who moves into the bubble these days.

Remember that the major export of Arkansas to real civilation is acne. Or is that Louisiana?

  • Bethany

    Hey now…I’m from Arkansas.

  • Miles Morrison

Bethany, there are exceptions to most rules. I am sure you have no acne. How did you avoid such?

  • Bethany

Steadfast avoidance of most things fried, my friend.

  • Miles Morrison

In my field, I meet PEOPLE who are fried.

  • Bethany

As long as they’re not dipped in batter and thrown in melted lard, you’re fine.

  • Charles Geilich

Now, Bethany, this could be a vicious rumor, but I thought lard dipping and battering was a common activity in Arkansas.

Oh, it is. Which is why I left. However, if you’re passing near Fayetteville, and you want good barbecue, you have to go to Hermans on Highway 71 - or North College as it’s called once you hit town.

Unless you want sushi. Then you need to go Asahi on Dickson Street.

Other than that, it’s all fried. Or beer.

Camp Ozark is near Hot Springs (actually in the metropolis known as Mt Ida) - any suggestions for dining in Hot Springs? I am assuming not a whole lot of choices in Mt Ida…

  • Amy

Hot Springs has a “hot spot” strip of the regulars such as an Outback steakhouse, On the border and Chili’s. After that your looking at fast food and if you have time stop off at walmart. It’s a hot springs favorite for counselors. There is a favorite in Mt. Ida…besides subway the favorite among counselors and now campers (because the tshirts are a hit!) is a small shack called the Dairyette. It’s got great shakes, burgers, chicken etc. If your grabbing food on the way there you will have no problem but if your attempting to pick up food after leaving camp expect a long wait. I mean who really enjoys the camp BBQ?? We’ve been eating the food for 2 weeks most kids I know just want fast food!

Coys steak house in Hot Springs is really good. They also have a really good BBQ resturant. For breakfast the pancake house is good as well.
