Starbucks No More

Rumor has it that one of the Starbucks to be closed will be the one in Old Town Village.  Much to Merritt’s dismay, that was my favorite, and most-used Starbucks.

That was the one I go to if I’m in a hurry and don’t have time to chat with my neighbors. There’s also a rumor that the one on the second floor of NorthPark by the theatre is closing, too.

Now the Northpark closing would surprise me. It’s new, it’s big, and it always seems busy to me.

But there’s two Starbucks in NorthPark. I’m pretty sure it’s the other one, that’s tucked between two stores.

Now Starbuck’s will only be on every other corner. Has anyone seen Best in Show? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQKdEdzHnfU

I don’t really like the Starbucks near the food court part of Northpark…the service isn’t that great and it is so noisy over there.

If this is true, it hasn’t been announced yet. Hope yet?

Oh, I hope not! First Balls, then my favorite SBUX! The end times approach.

Currently, there is on only one Starbucks in Dallas closing according to the company’s website. It’s the lone Starbucks in South Dallas. Funny, south Dallasites said it was overdue for the company to place a store in Dallas. It was only 2 years ago that there wish was granted. Obviously, not enough people there supported the store.

On WFAA (I think?) last night they were interviewing people who were putting together some kind of campaign to save one of the Dallas Starbucks that is slated to close. Quote of the night was something along the lines of, “If this one closes, I don’t know where I will go”. Ummmmmmm, how about across the street to another Starbucks? They are spaced approximately 1/10 of a mile apart throughout the Metroplex.

JS-There are actually 3 Starbucks in “South Dallas.” There is one at I-30 and Chalk Hill, one at US 67 and Camp Wisdom, and one at Illinois and Westmoreland. The first two are doing well because they get quite a bit of business from commuters. The third location, the location that is shutting down, was a spec location for Starbucks. It is located in a Hispanic oriented shopping center, with terrible access and visibility issues. The south Dallasites that have been clamouring for a Starbucks are recent arrivals to North Oak Cliff and tend to not go outside of the area they identify as North Oak Cliff — Illinois and Westmoreland is way beyond this area and their comfort zone. This Starbucks, sadly, was doomed to fail, since it required one demographic (educated, higher income) to drive through and go to an area of town and to a retail center which is geared toward a conflicting demographic (uneducated, low income).
In addition, when that Starbucks opened, and even to this day, there are thousands of people in North Oak Cliff that don’t even know this location exists. Starbucks has not advertised, and our local print and online media have not and will not mention this location (they will mention the other 2 “South Dallas” locations). Sadly, if it does get mentioned now, it will be because the location has failed.

Yeah, I thought I read there was only 1 in South Dallas. At any rate, there are now 27 Starbucks in the Metroplex that will close. Not a big deal to me since I buy premium beans and have a grinder that we use at home for a fraction of the cost.

Twenty-seven closings?! I might have to take to the streets. This is an outrage.

  • Charles Geilich

By the way, JS, where did you get the sad news of 27 closings?
