A little bit ago I was driving behind a Parkie SUV with a bumper sticker that said “Friends don’t chain friends. Bring dogs inside.” There was a picture of a cartoonish dog on a leash that looked sad.
I don’t get it. Does that mean we’re to treat dogs like people? Can you not leave a dog outside with water and shade?
Dude, I’ve seen Craig’s List. They do SO chain each other sometimes.
I think it meant to address problems with dogs chained to stationary objects for long periods of time, often without shade or adequate water for our hot climate (usually outside of the Park Cities, I’d assume). But, if you want ask questions about treating dogs like humans like you’re totally ignorant to the fact that the bumper sticker might be addressing a real problem just because it’s a slow news day on Craigslist, by all means, it’s your blog…
I can see a problem with leaving dogs chained up…what irks me are the people that insist that dogs can never be outside…if they weren’t pets, they’d be running wild outside anyhow.
I absolutely think pets can be left outside as long as proper care is taken. Unfortunately, there are a lot of folks out there that don’t excercise the same care you or I would. It’s a bad deal right now in certain parts of town. I mean, Merritt said the cartoon dog had a sad face, so obviously he had the type of owner that didn’t exercise care.
It’s never right to leave a dog chained up, unless it is with you in the front yard while you’re weeding. There are quite a few breeds that cannot indure heat and excessive exercise at all. Such as pugs and French Bulldogs. Their smushed snouts have compromised their ability to breathe well and regulate their body temperature. I once ran into this parkie chick at a local pet store, who was considering on getting a puppy for her child. But she did not want it in her house or the backyard. Her plan was to keep it in the garage. The store owner politely told her that unless she was willing to treat that puppy as one of the family, she had no right to even consider getting a pet. I feel very sorry for her children. It’s too bad we can’t pick our parents. captcha words are “Company” and Shady”.
It’s the “chained up” thing that I have a problem with. Running loose around the backyard is great if your dog has access to shade and water.
Wonder where she got that really unique bumper sticker?
Chain or no chain, it’s too hot for dogs to be left outside in a backyard.
I agree it’s just too hot right now.We don’t have to treat pets like humans, we do need to treat them in a loving humane way.
Even though we’re all taking care of our own pups at home, there are a lot of dogs who aren’t as fortunate right now. I definitely recommend supporting your local SPCA or other animal shelter year round, but they especially need help in the extreme weather (hot & cold).
We had some classy neighbors on Normandy who staked their dog in the front yard. Even better it would occasionally break loose and it looked like it had some doberman in it.
It’s cruel and inhumane to leave a dog chained by him- or herself. I’ve seen dogs hang themselves on their chain. Dogs who are chained for long periods of time become mean and extremely territorial, forced to defend their tiny patch of dirt which is sadly their home. And when a mean and extremely territorial dog breaks the chain (and it happens more often than you think), your children are at risk. So, yes, we are supposed to treat dogs like people. We should love and care for dogs like people. Otherwise, we will not know compassion for all living beings.
