Someone Bears False Witness to Merritt

From our page 2 columnist:

So someone (a Parkie) picking up an across the street neighbor kid backed out of their driveway after I backed out of mine. . My car was already in the lane and I was starting to move forward. He backs into the side of my car and bashes the crap out of the passenger side front and back doors. I got out and said I’d need his ins info and he said, “what? we were both backing out and just ran into each other.”

No, you don’t smash the side of someone’s car with the back of your car and say we’re both  at fault.

So I got his ins agent info, wrong number. There was an HPISD sticker on his car. I’ll find him.

Game on, brother.

I think he picked on the wrong girl! Go, Merritt!

Yes, this situation is so frustrating. I had the same experience about a year and half ago in a parking lot. While backing out, someone else backed out and creased the side of my car. Agents for both insurance companies tried to tell me it was our mutual fault, as if I could back the side of my car into the other car.

And what great Captcha words for a lawyer: dreamed defending

Hope you got his license plate number. And if you didn’t, just describe his vehicle and the placement of said HP sticker and let’s go find him.

What about the neighbor who’s kid was picked up. Are friendly enough with them to get the real identity of the driver?

  • Gadfly

Meant to say: “Are YOU friendly enough”

Merritt, do you need me to make him cry?

Having ridden in a car with Merritt, I am HIGHLY suspicious of this accident report. I suspect she was in a drive through, for example, a Wendy’s and suddenly changed her mind and decided to get Jack in the Box, and that’s how “he” hit her. IJS…

In all seriousness, this happens all the time, and unless the police are called to write a report, there is very little you can do. Sue in small claims (if under 5K), or have your insurance do it for you…

    Poor little Merrit.

  • Charles Geilich

In my case, the insurance company said they might sue on my behalf but not to count on it. I didn’t, and they didn’t.

Fortunately for Merritt, she has other ways to make people belly up to the cashier. Such as this blog…or her column, etc. When you think of Merritt in a conflict, think of High Noon (the movie) but picture the other guy with no weapon.

Too bad Texas doesn’t have no-fault insurance.

A picture is worth a thousand words. In this day and age of camera phones getting pictures of the damage to both cars is highly advisable. A picture of the car would have helped track him down.

years ago, a well known “architecturally significant” dallas real estate agent once smacked up my bumper while i was parked downtown outside the YMCA. i sat and waited to see who wedged the big obnoxious cadillac into a too-small space and out he came, yelling profanities and denying he’d had anything to do with the damage, before barreling off. i called him a few times but didn’t have the merritt in me to get compensated (and of course it was just under the amount of $ that would’ve made it worthwhile to chase him down). however i’ve always enjoyed drawing devil horns on his head when i see his photo surface occasionally in PaperCity

hope you will track down and share the cad’s identity. could my captcha be a hint? “Mole Rooney”

It’s a good idea ALWAYS to call the police immediately in an accident situation, even minor ones. The officer will check the licenses, registration and proof of insurance. If the other person bolts before the officer arrives, that’s also an offense.
