Celebrate The Light

Friends of Katy Trail will host a lighting ceremony at the Victory Park overlook on the Katy Trail, at 8:15 p.m. Monday, June 23. That overlook has a great view of the city. I might have opted for the Knox Street “overlook” with the funky noise-making markers and the better people watching. Of course I am always looking for anything to take my mind off the pain of exercising.

If you cannot attend, but like what the Katy Trail is doing to make it safer for exercisers, sign up to be a friend, light a foot or the “whole nine yards”.

Chillout With Celebrities

A great opportunity to spot celebrities in the contest Merritt mentioned here, is at next Friday’s chillOUT at The Palladium.  Lifehouse will provide a special unplugged acoustical performance while celebrities and athletes like Geoff and George Stults, Sam Page, Bryan Greenberg Mike Modano, Jason Terry, and DeMarcus Ware mix and mingle with guests. Auction items include autographed memorabilia from The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Ted Williams, Babe Ruth and others, packages such as a meet and greet with Derek Jeter and his two seats to a Yankee game, along with other great gift items.  Derek Jeter’s package is a definite eye catcher.  Contact Lara Beth Seager lbseager@heroesbaseball.org to purchase tickets for this VIP event.

chillOUT is the pre-cursor to the Reebok Heroes Celebrity Baseball Game on June 28. Saturday’s activities include be a tailgater, home run derby, and celebrity baseball game followed by a fireworks show.  A fun-filled family event with another opportunity for celebrity sightings. Ticket prices start at $5.

Sports Camp Scoop

Recently, I overheard several conversations about sports camps and listened in awe over the jockeying required to secure a spot in the camps. It seems sports camps are like the summer camps, YMCA camps, etc… requiring early bird sign-ups the day registration opens.  Yes, I know someone who arrived at the Park Cities Y by 5:30 a.m. to secure camp and other programs for her 5 year old.

If you are scrambling to send your athletes to a sports camp or three, check out this list.

We’re the Best in Texas

Some readers have inquired as to why we use the slogan “the best weekly newspaper in Texas” on our masthead. It is , of course, because we know we work at the best weekly newspaper in Texas. But it is nice to periodically get an outside opinion that confirms our status.

I’ve just returned from the Texas Press Association convention, and I’m pleased to announce that Park Cities People has won the sweepstakes prize as the best large weekly in the state for the 14th time in the just over 20 years that we’ve been eligible for the annual Better Newspaper Contest.

Congratulations to the entire staff of Park Cities People, which proved again this year that we are the best that Texas has to offer.

To see the prizes we earned in individual categories, and what the judges had to say about us, (more…)

Highland Park White?

What is “Highland Park white” and how is it different than just regular white? I’ve contacted the author of the ad for specifics. Developing.
