Based on this comment on the DMN blog, I’m concerned that HP and UP are getting totally mixed up here. For the record, the basketball thing was UP. I just don’t want all the free PR going to HP, ya know?
It’s easy to get a little distaste in your mouth towards a group of individuals so concerned with their bubble that they propose silly things like prohibiting basketball hoops in the fronts of their houses, toll roads on residential streets. Let’s also not forgot that the cops have so little to do that they will write you a ticket for running in the street.
I think it’s because we’re so politically liberal. We have Obama voters, some of use are against leaf blowers. The rest of Dallas County just isn’t as progressive as we are.
As for runners, all you have to do is go to city hall and get the blue and yellow tag that identifies you as a resident of the Park Cities and you can run in the streets all you want;)
All absurdities aside, the PC offers a quality of life second to none in North Texas (Southlake, Frisco, and Allen included) We have great schools for our kids. Neighborhood churches are available for our spiritual needs. Our schools and churches plus our compactness as a city gives us a sense of community you can’t find anywhere else (and yes I have lived in Lakewood and it is different!) We have an overabundance of banks, retail and restaurants. We only lack in professional sports venues, music halls and art galleries. If we had those we would never leave the PC.
Some people hate the PC because they don’t think its fair for only a small percentage of the population to have what we have. They think that if everyone can’t experience what we have then no one should.
These small-minded people can actually be found inside the PC as well as outside. I think that PC guilt (like the political phenomena, white guilt) is alive and well in this area.
James ate his Wheaties today. Go Tucker!!
James, I like your style!
Good comments, James. I, too, lived in Lakewood for years, and I liked the area. Personally, I like the PC better. For me, the reasons are schools, security, community, and cleanliness. That last one is a big one that we sometimes take for granted.
And there may be some “white guilt,” although I think there’s very little. Importantly, though, it’s always a good idea for any community of people not to take itself too seriously, and this blog is one outlet for taking a healthy laugh at ourselves.
But the easy answer to the question, “Why are Parkies so Hated?” is the same as it for professional athletes, politicians, musicians, etc.: the only thing America loves more than building people up is tearing them down.
My Captcha words: “shining buyer.” How PC.
It should not be such a mystery. Its a community full of people that will knock down a half million dollar house next to their own in the blink of an eye to double the size of their house, and people who buy their 16 year old children cars that are nicer than many other people will ever drive, and people who are so concerned with maintaining a attractive facade that most of their time and energy goes to building this weak shell of social success that they aren’t taking care of what is important at home. Its a community where you can drive through the neighborhood at any time of the day to see Mexican hosuekeepers walking blue eyed, blond children while talking in Spanish on their cell phones, and who know’s where mom is. And their country club still does not have a member of color. And the most important reason that people don’t like Park Cities is that when the question comes up, they cant quite put their finger on a good reason why anyone would dislike such a wonderful group of people.
Your clueless Tim.
Am I clueless? I went to high school here, and have lived here about 10 years now.
Here are some quotes from the blog:
It may have something to do with the “Cash beats trash” signs you used to (still do?) see at some of HP’s high school football games.
Yes, it is part jealousy, but it’s also partly a legit criticism of some (hopefully the minority) people in that part of town who think money makes them better than others.
Remember that advertisement from the glossy women’s mags: “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful”? To me, that’s a little like the Park Cities attitude.
PC guilty Tim. Nothing in your statement of 6-13 rings true about the majority of PCers.
