HPHS Grad with a 4.0 GPA Good Enough?

Well, it’s not a big enough deal for Vanderbilt and it doesn’t guarantee him a spot at U.T. either. That really stinks.

Killer scores? Well, what were they?
What Advance Placement classes did he take and how did he do on the AP tests?
How about sports or extra-curricular activities?
It’s harder to get in, yes, but kids and parents know the drill.
Life is not over if you don’t get in to Vanderbilt.

My child was in exactly the same boat as Sam Davison (good kid BTW).

Sam will now be a summer freshman at UT - no different than the student who starts in the fall. There is no “maybe” about it - most students outside the top 10% of their high school graduating class who get into UT liberal arts or natural science undergraduate schools start in the summer.

If he was in undergraduate education or social work he would start in the fall.

My student started UT less than a week after HP graduation in undergraduate liberal arts - overwhelming at first, but a great thing to get down to Austin and take some hours and get acclimated.

It is not a provisional admit - Sam will be a Longhorn - and in twelve months he will wonder why he ever thought of going anywhere else.

Sam will be a “summer freshman” at UT. There is no maybe whether or not he is in - he is - as UT seems to start those students admitted in undergraduate liberal arts or natural sciences who graduated outside of the 10% of their high school class in the summer class.

Those students are no different than any other incoming freshmen except they start taking classes earlier (no more than 9 hours that summer).

It is actually a great way to get acclimated to UT and Austin.

In twelve months, he will be wondering why he ever considered going to another school.

I got a mass email from hp about this … it turns out that Sam was accepted at Vanderbilt afterall. Here’s a link included in the email about the story http://www.wfaa.com/video/index.html?nvid=251163

Ha, that’s nothing. A kid that just graduated from my old high school got a PERFECT score on his SAT and Rice didn’t accept him. Rice!! And a couple years before I graduated they didn’t accept the Valedictorian either. It’s ridiculous.

By the way, I’m not trying to downsize or be rude about Sam at all. He deserves it just as much, if not more, than anyone to be able to decide where he wants to go to school.

Grades shouldn’t be the sole factor in determining whether someone gets accepted to a college. It sounds like admittance committees are just placing more importance on being well-rounded.

Glad that things worked out for Sam. I’m sure he’s a good kid who will be successful wherever he goes.
