From Merritt, by way of an alert reader, comes a query about limousines spotted in front of Hyer during carpool dropoff recently. I did see a limo yseterday, and although I didn’t see one today, I’m told there was one. All I saw today was a UP Police SUV parked at the entran
ce.
So, before we get on our soapbox about the inappropriateness of driving young children to school in limos, does anyone know the story on this?
Could be a 4th grade graduation gag.
4th grade graduation… what a joke.
MC, meet Miles, a therapist who can help you with your feelings of inferiority.
I guess MC doesn’t know how the school system works in the Park Cities. The 4th grade is the last grade in the elementary schools. These kids will be leaving the school they have attended for 5 years and move to the Intermediate School which is in a different campus and consolidates all 4 elementary schools. This will be the last time they will be together as a group. We make a big deal out of that and don’t offer any apologies to those that try to make fun of it.
The limo was for the kid whose parents purchased “Principal for the Day” at the Hyer auction. It’s part of the whole principal for the day package sold at the auction. They don’t do limos for 4th grade graduation.
What do the kids have to look forward to if they have done all the limos and high end parties by age 10. It is a ongoing can you top this through their school years. By the time they are in High School the “prom is a bore and it is only fun when you can drink and go to somebodies lake house” so sez a HP Junior.
It is a special event for the 4th graders. Parents can you tone it down a bit? Is this more for your gratification and oneupsmanship? I’m just askin’
The limo was for the boy who was “Principal for the Day” this week. “Principal for the Day” is a package that is sold at the Hyer auction and bidded on by parents. We don’t do limos for 4yh grade graduation…ridiculous…
James, Ive been in the Highland Park system for 12 years. I’m graduating next week.
I understand the whole 4th grade thing with the party at the DCC. But brining a limo to school is a little over the top…
cc-thanks for the clearing up.
missie-I think I love you.
The limo was for the boy who was “Principal for the Day” this week.—–
Shouldn’t it be “Principal for the Week” then?
I heard next year, the “Principal for the Day” gets to come to 4th grade in a helicopter.
I think Missie has hit on something. Much, not all, of what is overboard in the PC (and elsewhere, I might add) is done more for the parents than it is for the kids.
I also think MC cleared up much in the second sentence of his first paragraph.
It’s a little over the top, but Principal for the Day with a limo ride to school can bring in some big money at the school auction. And the winning bidder can write off any amount over the value of the limo as a donation to the school.
That’s good enough for me, Jen.
It’s for a good cause.
And that’s why I didn’t want to get on a soapbox before I heard the story. Now it makes sense.
