Well, as promised, a couple staffers from the paper attended Merritt’s skit. With three minutes before the start of the production, Austin and I ran to the car and headed to the UP Auditorium.
We meandered around the school looking for the office, and were about to give up on the whole idea when we finally found it. The lady at the front asked if we were from the high school. That made us feel good (and as Austin said, at least she didn’t assume we were parents).
After getting our badges, we made our way to the auditorium when suddenly we ran into Emmajane Merritt. She indeed had on a beautiful blond wig tied back in ponytails. She escorted us to our seats and gave us background on the skits.
We settled down and eagerly awaited her performance. It began with the soulja boy dance. Kind of awesome. Then the group sang songs from Camp Write Along, the kids all joined in. You could tell they were ecstatic to see their moms up on stage. Austin thought it was odd the kids would know Ice, Ice Baby, but I told him they probably only know the Camp Write Along words.
Overall, it was a wonderful production.
And sorry for the quality of the photo, we were sitting pretty far back, and Merritt had threatened death if film came out, so I grabbed the photo fearing for my life. And now I’m posting it. Fearing for my life.
And to think Merritt was nervous about her performance! Here she is looking poised and confident, her hands artisticly gripping the pencil. I am so bummed to have missed it.
Um, Krista, with regard to the headline of your post, what was Soulja Boy before?
Nice grip! Looks like there’s some experience there.
