Watering Cement

I understand about glass houses, and I know that most of us in the PC live big, in our houses, our cars, and our use of natural resources. But, this is too much.

img_0195.JPGSince at least the beginning of March, and very possibly before then, a house in the Hillcrest/Marquette area …

…has run its sprinklers every morning. Every single morning, rain or shine. (It was raining when I took this photograph). And what is being watered? Partly, the narrow strip of grass running between the sidewalk and the street, but mostly the sidewalk and street itself. Every single day.

Is this yard any greener or prettier than those around it? Not at all. Please, dear homeowner, try to be a better neighbor. It won’t take any sacrifice on your part.

This is the kind of thing that UP should be looking at rather then trash cans in the alley. I think there is even a statute on the book about homeowners being responsible for maintaining proper alignment of sprinkler heads.

Try leaving a note in the residents mailbox. I doubt they read your blog.

I hate seeing the sprinkler runoff rivers that start running down the streets this time every year. Last summer when we started having so much rain, I turned our sprinkler system off completely and left if off for months. The rain took care of the yard, and it looked great. We get used to having the convenience of an automatic sprinkler system, but we’re much better off just turning it on manually when the lawn actually needs to be watered, which isn’t nearly as often as people seem to think. Now if we can just get everyone to stop using blowers….

I’m with you, Jen. I’ve barely had my sprinklers on so far this year, and our yard looks quite green. There has been plenty of rain. (No lawn treatments, either, by the way).

My next door neighbor is a notorious character in my neighborhood. She waters her sidewalks several times a day. She has completely killed her front yard (sickly looking ground cover) several times. When we renovated our home, we had to install concrete pilings and a foundation for our driveway, which had to be raised 12 inches, so it wouldn’t sink. Again. The HP engineers know her and have fined her but she keeps at it. Everyday. Rain or shine. She’s watered in rain storms, in winter wearing a fur coat, in summer wearing a leopard bikini.

That strip of grass they’re watering isn’t looking so hot.

Kersten, your comment reminds me of a certain Stars hockey player who used to live on Centennary who was known for watering the alley behind his house with a garden hose, cigarette dangling from his mouth. He was so absorbed in this activity that it would take him a moment to notice a car approaching him.

Nice enough guy, but a water waster.

Oh please tell me he was wearing a bathrobe. That would complete the picture.

Won’t the sidewalk grow if you water it?

  • Charles Geilich

Maybe WCM is right, or maybe the homeowner just doesn’t care, because the watering of the sidewalk and street continued this morning.
