Hyer Elementary School Nurse Joanne Hardaway (pictured at left) has been named one of the 2008 Great One Hundred Nurses by the Texas Nurses Association Districts Three and Four and the Dallas/Fort Worth Hospital Council. The “Great 100” will be honored for exemplifying excellence in the art and science of nursing at a celebration Monday at the Meyerson Symphony Center. Jump for the full release.
“Joanne Hardaway is an example of excellence in nursing practice and a mentor to her colleagues,” said HPISD school health services coordinator Jean Hoyt-Sehnert. “Acknowledgment as a Great One Hundred Nurse provides public recognition and affirmation of her dedication, compassion, service, and leadership. Our school and our community are most fortunate to have this exemplary nurse.”
Hardaway worked as a nurse in Cleveland, Ohio, and at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas before becoming a substitute nurse in HPISD. She has been the school nurse at Hyer for 17 years and will retire at the end of the 2007-08 school year.
Principal Greg Smith says of Joanne, “To say that all of us at Hyer will miss Joanne would be the understatement of the year. Joanne has been the nurse at Hyer for 17 years and is loved by all who know her. Joanne has a way of making those scrapes hurt a little bit less. I often refer to Joanne as “The Safety Czar” at Hyer — the safety of all students, staff and parents are always her first priorities. I just cannot say enough about this wonderful nurse and this wonderful friend to us all.”
My first-grader loves Nurse Hardaway, who must be a very patient woman given how many times my daughter went to see her, especially at the beginning of the school year. These visits were for somewhat-less-than-serious illnesses and injuries.
Joanne Hardaway is so deserving of this great honor. She is such a caring person and Hyer is lucky to have her. She will be missed next year!
Joanne does a great job of taking care of our kids whether a fever, an upset stomach, a head ache or last week a DFB (at Children’s this is a double forearm break). They said her temporary splint was perfect. Thanks a bunch.
