Do you think it’s true that our schools start the summer vacation immediately after TAKS testing, basically blowing off the last month of classes? Or are the kids exaggerating?

Exaggeration. My 4th and 5th grader have projects due in a few weeks. Also, their reading requirements are still part of their final grade. My kids think that summer break should start after Easter.

I don’t do anything anyway…

But in all seriousness, that is the problem with this district. State wide testing is the number one priority, and sometimes that hinders real education. They only prepare kids with Taks and other state testing, kind of sad.

It’s been an odd week, schedule wise, for my highschooler. He didn’t have to go until 1 pm on Tues and then only had two classes and then came home. TAKS testing W/Th/F with open lunch periods (woo-hoo,the highlight of his day!) Today he has that physical fitness test after TAKS. Next week is AP exams with sort of an odd schedule again. After that, two weeks left until finals. Yes, he’s feeling summer fever big time!

Not true at HPMS, in my experience. Students will be loaded down with work until the cutoff a couple of days before final exams.
Also, TAKS has not been a priority for my kid’s teachers, to their credit. I think the school identifies at-risk students in the fall and schedules more time in the subject matter for them. While the curriculum all year includes the required Texas objectives, TAKS review eats only a couple of days, maybe even less for science and social studies, which they don’t have to pass.
This district has problems, but making state testing the number one priority is not one of them. They just don’t do that.

anon, you are wrong. There number 1 priorities are AP testing, Taks and other state wide testing. I am a senior and have been in this district since kindergarten. We prepare all year in AP classes to take the AP exam.
The entire year is Taks review, you just won’t open your eyes.

My 5th grader said they started reviewing for one of the 6th grade TAKS tests. Unbelievable!
