Recycling Bins Inspire Overheardian’s Graphic

2-32gallon.jpgThe latest addition of the city of University Park newsletter announces a new recycling program to launch in June. All single-family residences will receive an 18-gallon bin for recycling. This news inspired one Overheardian to create the picture you see at left. Here’s what else she had to say:

What the heck are they thinking? 18-gallon bins???!!! That size won’t hold didly squit. A big REALITY CHECK is very much needed. I mean like you guys writing up something in your paper. And with pictures, since our concerned city is unable to visualize their own solution. Especially since they are having trouble dealing with ordinance/code revisions for trash can placement in our alleys.

As a single gal living in a 1800 sq. ft. cottage, I have at least two to three 30-gallon BLUE bags a week and only one 30-gallon black bag per week. If the city REQUIRES us to have 32-GALLON trash cans for our regular garbage, why are they delivering a dippy 18-gallon bin for recycling? And how are we suppose to place it so it won’t get blown, run over, and then pulverized? A year ago, 32-gallon recycling bins were not available, but they are now. I will be buying mine online, and the first thing that will go in it is the 18-gallon bin.

My wife and I share a 96-gallon roll cart provided by the city of Dallas (we live across the street from the HP border) with the couple who lives in the other half of our duplex. That means we have 48 gallons we can fill with recyclables every week. And we do.

Our recycling is always larger than the regular trash. It’s nice that UP will provide a recycling bin, but I think they will find that the bins are overloaded.

If an 18 gallon bin is approx. 57% of a 32 gallon trash can does that photo look proportionately correct? My untrained eyes say no - but I love the idea of showing the difference between the sizes.

We average four blue trash bags a week (and there are only three of us). Eighteen gallons won’t be adequate and we will be buying our own.

Will the City pick up from a bought bin versus the official ones? WIll it need to have its lid secured like regular trash cans?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

    Recycling? What’s that?

I think the idea is to softly ease the good citizens of the Park Cities into the idea of recycling. I’m sure it’s a whole new concept to them. Similar to the one about SUVs being major polluters and gas guzzlers.
