In light of our discussion about our love of the Park Cities, a forum-browsing Overheardian shares a link to a online discussion forum in which a fellow going by the name of “Lakewooder” says:
I have more than enough money to live in HP - but I don’t want to be around those types. The way they treat others is despicable and by criticizing them I am not revealing my own shortcomings (IMO) - I am calling them out and asking them to be ashamed.
Unfortunately I can name too many instances in which I have witness this occur.
Of course there are people in HP like that, but generalizations like this are ridiculous. I know plenty of salt-of-the-earth people from HP, and I’m sure there are plenty of jerks in Lakewood, too.
Note that the hatred in question is actually directed only at HP, whereas the inaccurate header says “Park Cities.” Maybe the original author was equivocating unintentionally, but maybe not. I live in UP, and also think people in HP have a tendency to treat others somewhat poorly. I, too, could afford to live in HP but never would (although I did briefly as a child). I know more than one family who left UP for HP, not thinking it would be much different, and then fairly promptly moved back, to be among “nice” people again. Of course, part of it has to do with the age demographics. HP is an older crowd, whose children are more likely to be grown and long since out of the house. Thus, by nature, a somewhat less family-friendly environment, and more a “keep off my lawn!” environment.
“I am calling them out and asking them to be ashamed.”???? This guy sounds like he thinks he is a prophet. I didn’t know that Rev. Wright had moved to Lakewood.
Otto is correct that “Lakewooder” singled out HP. But then he probably doesn’t know there’s a difference between UP and HP. I can understand an outsider’s confusion. After all, Highland Park Presbyterian, Highland Park United Methodist, and Highland Park High School are all, despite their names, located in University Park.
Haha look at all these HP people getting mad… hilarious.
I don’t represent all of Lakewood. We have a lot of different kinds of people of various stripes.
As a native Dallasite I know the difference between HP and UP. I lived on the SMU campus, have sold RE for 25 years, etc. When people say “HP” they are usually referring to graduates of Highland Park High.
I once had a Realtor friend who would correct UP residents when they said they lived in HP. If looks could kill…
Yes, I know some nice folks from HP/UP. Most of them now live elsewhere
Of course, I am old enough to remember the days when HP/UP was more like Lakewood, with all different types..that changed after Judge William Taylor.
Solve both problems and just move to Southlake! Good schools (some would argue better than HPISD) and LAND, and normal down-to-Earth people! That’s what I did and I DON’T miss Dallas or Dallas County!
BTW, is it better to live in DISD just to avoid “those types”?
OK now I am forced to defend the bubble since you dissed Dallas and Dallas County. I’d much rather live closer to Lakewood in Park Cities than way out in Southlake under the flight path.
And we have some great DISD schools in Lakewood (some would argue better than Southlake).
I was really kidding to some degree. I do like the Park Cities and Lakewood, to be honest. Even with the planes flying over my acre lot, it is STILL quieter than my house in Dallas ever was!
And, if you want to compare schools use the same data source that D Magazine uses and Texas Monthly uses, http://www.just4kids.org. You will find Stonewall is up there with HPISD and CISD but I believe that’s it. Lakewood is close but not in the same category. Still, good for you for that short commute!
