Nothing to do With the Park Cities: Polygamy Edition

For anyone shocked and dismayed by the reports of what’s been going on in Eldorado, I must recommend you read Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. I weep to think I may never write anything as good in my life. It is an eye-opening portrait of fundamentalist Mormonism.

I recently finished it myself, and am pleased that Texas authorities are finally stepping in to protect the hundreds of children who have suffered at the hands of this culture of abuse for too many years hidden away from the law.

Polygamy between adults who sincerely believe “the principle” is part of God’s plan for man is one thing; forcing a 13-year-old girl to marry a 60-year-old man and bear his children, that’s very much another.

Even polygamy between consenting adults raises the question: more than one wife at a time? Are you kidding!

This is ridiculous! Saying “Polygamy between adults who sincerely believe ‘the principle’ is part of God’s plan for man” is acceptable??? You can rationalize multiple wives by using God and religion to mask your backwards thinking?? They should lock you up with the rest of the twisted perverts.

I think we may have miscommunicated, Adam.

I don’t believe I used the word “acceptable.”

Some people would defend the rights of polygamists by saying that the government shouldn’t prevent them from practicing what they believe to be a mandate from God. I’m saying that is an argument worth discussion.

What’s not open to debate is any claim that marrying 13-year-olds off — in some cases to their own stepfathers or fathers — should be honored as “religious freedom.”

I’m with Jason. I’m pretty much of the opinion that consenting adults who aren’t hurting anyone else should be allowed to do as they please, with emphasis on “consenting adults” and “aren’t hurting anyone else.”

Allegedly, the “consenting adult” part and the “not hurting anyone else” part was missing in this case.

It’s just, um, icky. And it smacks of the Koresh era in Waco. I’m just glad no one in Eldorado was stockpiling weapons. No Janet Reno involvement here. Um, did I mention it’s icky!?

Besides, what man in his right mind would WANT to deal with more than one wife? We womenfolk are nutjobs.
