I hope the PC governments don’t get word of this. The Taliban in Afghanistan are pressuring mobile phone operators to shut down at night because “occupying forces” use the signals to track Taliban fighters.
Clearly, this could be used right here to track TPers on their midnight vandalism sprees.
1. I think pressuring is the wrong word. I pressure my kids to do better in school with a variety of positive and negative reinforcements. The correct word that should be used in conjunction with the Taliban is threatening. The article that talks about this says that the taliban will start to blow up cells towers and other facilities if their demands aren’t met. That is threat not pressure.
2. Even the UPPD aren’t interested in TPers. I was in the “Hyer” Tom Thumb late one evening, talking to one of UP’s finest, when some kids came in and bought a 24 pack of toliet paper and some bar soap. The policeman was very polite when he told the kids were he would be patrolling in the next hour. They thanked him and went on their way.
3. Do you think that the mobile phone companies can create a “cone of silence” in our school zones? I know it would stop a revenue stream for city hall, but it would stop us from using cell phones.
I think the cone of silence is an effective idea, James, but where would it stop? Oh, sure, at first it would be benign, like school zones and maybe theaters, but if we stopped cell phone use everywhere it that it might be annoying or dangerous, we’d all just have to go back to land lines.
Come to think of it, doesn’t Jason survive that way? It seems impossible.
Have you ever tried to switch a call from handset mode to bluetooth while driving?? That’s exactly what you now need to do as you’re about to enter a school zone!!! I think that the local government fad of banning cell phones in school zones is actually LESS SAFE.
