Primary Question

The Texas Primary is just around the corner, and many of us are excited to cast a vote that might actually matter. In the election-season fervor, we only recently noticed that republicans and democrats are expected to vote at completely different polling sites, which we thought was weird. In other places, you can vote wherever you’re registered in the primary for whichever party you choose. So, what gives? Is it just Dallas County that does this, or is it a Texas thing? There have to be lawyerly Overheardians out there just bursting with information. To find out where you need to go March 4, click here.

While each party is responsible for running their own primary, the location arranged by Dallas Elections will almost always be in the same building. The two parties will probably pick different rooms, or different sides of a big room, for their respective setups.

And while each person must vote in their own precinct on election day, early voters can go to any polling place in the county.

They’re different polling “sites” — even if in the same building — because each party has a rule that you can only vote in its primary if you haven’t voted in any other primary.

Praise God that someone — our dear “Lawyerly Matt” — has got all of this right. For Republicans, caucasing is a non-issue. But because our primaries are open, you can be registered Rep. or Dem. or nothing — your registration does NOT MATTER. You can vote in whichever primary you wish.

And if you plan to vote in the Democratic primary, for Obama or HRC., this is a big deal. You might steer TX fron HRC to Obama or vice versa. Bottomline: DALLAS: YOU REALLY DO COUNT.

After you vote in the DEM primary election, caucusing begins at 7 pm in your precinct.

I will be at the UP fire station caucusing for Barack, as McCain seems to have the lock on the TX Repub. nomination. Never thought I’d see the day white Republicans were huddled up in a fire station to caucus for an African American in a democratic primary . . . until now. This is most definitely a new day dawning between the two parties. Celestial heavens, part now!
