It’s [Almost] Camp Time

And I need your help. I asked Merritt for her two cents on camps, and she sent me lots of great stuff. Then she included this little piece: (more…)

Need a Gift for V-Day? How About a Starter House?

2543835-2.jpgI can’t think of anything sweeter to give your loved one for Valentine’s than a cute 2/1/2 in Wilshire Heights. It’s a cozy love nest (owned by an in-office Overheardian, so maybe I’m partial); see more cute photos and information here.

Breaking News: Changes in the Family Tree

family2.jpgFor those of you who have been with us for a while, you know we here at Overheard have a bit of an inferiority complex about FrontBurner (they have more page views! they get so many comments! they’re so smart!). It has led us to post items like “why Tim Rogers pretends he doesn’t know us” and tease them out from time to time. But here’s the thing: After many lonely months of joking about being distant cousins, the talented folks at FB have moved us on up to the East Side of their homepage. We aren’t going to lie: This is a big day for us.

A few ground rules for this new relationship: (more…)

The Park Cities Backs Losers

After reading Charles’ post from earlier today, I got curious as to whether anything much had changed since we ran our story last September showing that Rudy Giuliani and John Edwards were the top two presidential candidates in terms of fundraising in the 75205 and 75225 ZIP codes. According to this site, that hasn’t changed.

To see the top fundraisers so far in each ZIP, (more…)

Re: February 8 Bulletin from the Bubble

I had to post this one:

Right, wrong or whatever. You’re totally like Simon on American Idol. People hate him because he tells people they’re bad singers and they call him rude. But deep down they agree with him and know those people have no talent.

I Have Roller Envy

roller.jpgOn Jan. 22 more than 100 student musicians from the bands and orchestras at HPMS and MIS took to the hardwoods for two hours of non-stop fun at their annual roller skating party. Keeley Hagenbuch, Tori Cathcart, Audrey Ward, and Alexandra Elkins look like they’re having a great time.

I’m jealous. Jason, I think it’s time for a team-building field trip.

Overheard is the Source

Dear Dallas Morning News,

Loved your article today. No big deal but we told you that was goin’ down like, I don’t know, five months ago?

Love,
Merritt

P.S. Don’t worry about it. It happens all the time.

UP Mom Seeks Man That Can’t Read Between the Lines

This University Park mom “seeks successful nice man with no agenda except finding everlasting happiness.”

Sweetheart, the word “everlasting” doesn’t go with “no agenda.” I think successful men might see right through your ad. Call me, we can re-write this together.

Concerning the February 8 Bulletin from the Bubble

Readers are just finishing this week’s column. I can’t win.

You’re back. We were worried that you’d gotten nice over the holiday.

Some people are happy but these, well, they’re not. (more…)

Re: 7th-grade Potheads

Education reporter Curtis Ippolito has a story in this Friday’s paper (already appearing on some doorsteps) about what happened. What I find most interesting are UP Police Chief Gary Adams’ comments:

“This is a slap in the face of our D.A.R.E. program. We’re spending thousands of dollars trying to teach kids to not do things like this, and then it happens in the middle school where we teach it.”

Not to discount at all what the police are doing, and I went to a school without a D.A.R.E program, but I don’t see how having kids write essays and design posters is putting even a dent in the drug problem. It seems to me we need more in-your-face methods. (more…)

I Must Be Crazy

But I’m going to attempt to run a half marathon in April (the ultimate goal is a marathon before I’m 25). To force inspire myself into training mode, I visited Luke’s Locker yesterday to get some new running shoes.

I had never been through the Luke’s Locker fitting procedure, but I loved it! After looking at my arches and whatnot, Polly, who helped me, brought out several pairs of shoes for me to try on. After quite the process of elimination, I settled on a pair of Nikes.

They didn’t have the color I wanted, but I’ll get them on Friday. Then you can expect to see me running (walking/jogging) everywhere! So if you haven’t gone to Luke’s, you should. And if you need a running partner, call me.

That’s a Lotta Dough

The 2008 Saint Valentine’s Day Luncheon and Fashion Show, benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, was big… Very big. Not only did thousands of women (and a few loving husbands) attend the event, but the luncheon made a record-breaking $564,000- and that’s just from ticket sales. Add up the raffle money, centerpiece purchases, and spur-of-the-moment donations, and you’ve got well more than half a million dollars.

Good work, ladies.

Texas Primary

Texas will actually matter this year in the nation’s selection of its presidential candidates, maybe more so on the Democratic side than the Republican. So, let’s talk politics.

Re: 7th Grade Potheads

The most eye opening and valuable information I could possibly receive as a parent is coming to me through the comments section of this post concerning the 7th grade girls at HPMS caught smoking pot. Check out comments by students “NT” and “WOW.”

I mean, not only are they up at 10:54 on a school night reading blogs but they already knew about this drug stuff, and sex too. But HPISD is paying off, they’re great writers. What they have to say is stuff we need to know. Students, keep it coming. How do we stop our kids from doing drugs? Give us the scoop.

And if you really don’t want it happening in your school, e-mail me the dirt on where it happens and how they get the drugs and why the adults don’t see it. We’ll work on it.
