Re: Chocolate Rage

The comments from the Chocolate Rage post made me curious and I visited the shop this morning. I have seen the place before but had never been in. I didn’t say anything to the man at the counter about why I was there.

I just browsed wondering if he was going to yell at me. When he approached, he was not mean to me but I was struck by what he chose to talk about. He started in on a big lecture about Dallas women, especially stay-at-home moms, not appreciating his jewelry. He said in one sentence that Dallas women are too simple and in the next he mentioned how they are too gaudy. He made sure I knew that Dallas is not his valued customer base. His best customers, the ones who have excellent taste, are from New York and Florida and have found his store by word of mouth. He was certainly a bit nuts about his negative opinions of women in the Park Cities and Dallas. It was particularly weird because he had to know there was a huge chance I was from Dallas.

So, I casually mentioned that I live in the Park Cities and had just never stopped in. He continued with his anti-female Parkie and anti-Dallas theme. In fact he kicked it up a notch with, “You won’t find anything in here that stay-at-moms string together while their kids are at school.

He doesn’t care for us much, let’s put it that way.

Update: I checked in with the UPPD and got the following information:

There was a call at Cadeaux’s on Friday, January 25th.  According to the
police report it involved a disturbance between the store owner and a
customer.

The disturbance involved a customer’s use of her cell phone while
handling merchandise in the store.  The owner was concerned about the
possibility of his merchandise being damaged and asked the lady not to
talk on the phone and handle the merchandise.  There was a scene.  The
final result was the customer being asked not to return to the business.

THIS is why I love Overheard. No where else can you get real reporting on this that I actually care about…I got that email yesterday and wondered what was really up. Now I know.

So we’re simple, and then we’re gaudy, and then we don’t have as much fashion sense as the people in New York and Florida? Note to shop owner: Dallas women are beautiful, and we like beautiful things. Offer a better selection of items, change your attitude, and maybe you won’t be the sore subject of a widely-read city blog. (A Google search confirmed that Dallas is his only store location.)

Now that’s both amusing and enlightening. Nothing like working to alienate your customer base.

Of course, he has a point about the strangely high value some people put on beaded jewelry they string together in their spare time.

Now, I guess this will be a test of whether there really is any such thing as bad publicity, or whether he just got a lot of free online press.

Good sleuthing! As a former resident of NYC for years — I’m sorry but his little shop has nothing canal street doesn’t have!

  • MS

ps - if you’ve been on Canal Street — you know what I’m talking about.

Why did you remove the name of the store as well as all the posts that referenced it? I notice that you did not have any problems naming names in past threads (regarding other businesses).

That chocolate is old and stale anyway. The shopping center is just about falling down and there is no parking. Seems like that guy picked the wrong fight with the wrong person on the wrong day. Dude, if you are reading this, you need some serious PR help.

minerve — I caught that too. Several comments to the original “Chocolate Rage” post were deleted. Personally, I think it’s kind of shady for any blogger to edit a post or delete legitimate, on-topic, non-profane comments without some sort of acknowledgment. Even a “[comment deleted]” in place of the deleted text would do.

Of course this is PCP’s blog, and they can do, or not do, whatever they want with it. But a blog has value only if it has credibility and the trust of its readers. Making stealth revisions and deletions diminishes trust and credibility, especially among the core group of loyal readers who are most likely to notice.

MS - Do you mean he sells Popeye’s Chicken in addition to fine jewelry and unfake purses? I am so there!!

And finally….Merritt’s unfortunate (but awesome) choice of “Chocolate Rage” as the title of her blog post reminded me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwTZ2xpQwpA. Enjoy!

hey neal — i meant cheap fake stuff that looks real. :)

  • Unstable

Oh, gee, Neal. Your link just cost me 5 minutes of my life that I am not getting back.

I’m thinking that the reason the chocolates are stale is because he feels the need to approach and then run off most of his customers.

    By my count, “chocolate rage,
” is the most popular site.
