A Little Bit o’ Glam

The Dallas Museum of Art League held a first glimpse cocktail party last night at The Stoneleigh Hotel. With an air of excitement, I walked up to the front and upon entering the lobby, I was immediately greeted by Elvis and a glass of champagne. (more…)

Frontburner = Breaking News

Unless you consider this, this, or this, or one of the other times Frontburner has looked right over us you wouldn’t realize that this is a semi-regular deal.

In fact, we give credit to Frontburner for things that we printed months before their post appeared. If Frontburner beat us to it, we say it. Really

Lake Highlands Flasher Caught

Just got this message from a reader. It’s a bit outside the Bubble, but just in case any of you happen to go up there to Abrams and Royal.

Since January 7th of this year there has been a flasher targeting women in their place of business. He hit 3 different businesses in the Town Creek center from the 7th to the 24th. One of the employees at the Artistik Edge decided to do a little “stalking” herself. She notified the police everytime she saw him for those 3 weeks but by the time they got here he would be gone. Finally, her tenacity paid off. On Thursday the 24th the flasher was back. He hit Remax, returning to the scene that evening, Melissa notified the officer on duty at the salon and he was arrested on the spot. Good work Melissa!!! Goodness prevails!!!

Doggone Dangerous

While I can appreciate the concern the PC has for distracted cell-phone using drivers, I wonder if our leaders have considered the danger posed by small women grappling the steering wheels of large cars while their yippy dogs gad about the interior with nary a restraint.  It was just such a disaster on wheels that nearly sideswiped me in the Hyer drop-off lane this morning.

Re: Chocolate Rage

Nancy has things jumpin on the same topic, see the SideDish blog and check out some of the heated comments like this one.

i’m sorry, but making anti-semitic remarks and talking on a cell phone in a public place are WAY WAY different.

Dr. McCollum, These Guys Deserve Proof of Your Whereabouts

img_5808_edited.JPGThese two Parkie husbands are loved by women everywhere. I think they look confused because they’re wondering how they got roped into bar tending last Friday night for Susan McCollum’s “Tinis and Tiaras” party. I mean, David McCollum lives there but he took it as an opportunity to “speak at a conference.” Whatever, Dr. McCollum! More to come…

Re: Chocolate Rage

The chocolate rage e-mail is blowin’ up the Interweb, y’all. At last count, there were 45 comments about the run-in at the chocolate store in University Park. Check them out.

Re: Wassup (What is up) With the Fountain?

Thanks for the clarification, Jason. Merritt’s ghetto “wassup” had me totally entirely confused. Entry two on Urban Dictionary clearly explains what Merritt meant. I am glad we have such a useful tool at our disposal. We can add “wassup” to the list of words Jason dislikes.

While on Urban Dictionary searching, I found another new word I think Parkie moms will like — Choreplay: When a woman is turned on by the sight of her husband/boyfriend/partner doing regular household chores that she would normally be doing.

Re: Chocolate Rage

Following on the much-discussed message from Monday, staff writer Cassie Clark got some more info from UPPD:

Talked with capt. holman-  he said no charges have been filed and the case is suspended. When the police arrived, they found no damage to anything, so it was filed as “disorderly conduct.” He hasn’t had any other calls on that store owner.

Re: What is up With the Fountain?

The print version of Overheard carried a story and an editorial about the redo of the fountain, which has been backing up traffic on Oak Lawn Avenue right outside our office for the past few weeks.

Read them here and also here.

Wassup with the Fountain?

A fountain watching Overheardian needs to know:

Do you know what is happening to the fountain on Preston and Armstrong?
There is construction all around it.

I was hoping to find some information on the Park Cities People Blog.

Dear Kid Biz, I Didn’t Really Mean It

I received the following e-mail in response to the January 18 Bulletin from the Bubble. Kudos to Kid Biz, they’re really good sports!

A Twist on Chips

img_1217.JPGNeeding something crunchy and delicious, yet somewhat healthy, Stephanie and I ventured to Whole Foods. Stephanie normally would have reached for the green bean chips, but they were out. But our eyes were immediately drawn to the bright orange display of carrot chips.

Stephanie, always the adventurous one, immediately reached for a chip and tried it. She said it was good. I’m a little less-than-courageous when it comes to trying new food, but I trust Stephanie.

So I reached for a bright chip and (more…)

Real Estate Buzz: Hot on the Market, Beverly at Preston

Everyone has been talking about the beautiful home at Preston and Beverly that was for sale by owner, but as of today, the property is listed with Keller Williams. (I guess even a property that visible was difficult to sell without a Realtor?) So here are the details: 4201 Beverly, asking price $2.495 million, on .4314 of an acre. The listing agents are Mary Jane Young, Cathy Baldwin, and Mary Ann Evetts of the Mary Jane Young Team at Keller Williams. Cathy said it should be on MLS today and will be on the Keller Williams site shortly.

Prince Charles Hangs with Parkies

I know it’s true because I read it on the D Home blog.

Marketing Strategist Needed for Parkie Craigslister

Dude, find another photo. You know, like one without your girlfriend in it. It might help with the overall response.

Taking the Hyer Road

There was no UP police presence around Hyer this morning.  I could have talked wildly on my cell phone, waving it around and even making a conference call.  Being a solid citizen, however, I declined the opportunity, and I didn’t see any other telecommunications scofflaws, either, so maybe the crackdown is working.

Re: Chocolate Rage

The comments from the Chocolate Rage post made me curious and I visited the shop this morning. I have seen the place before but had never been in. I didn’t say anything to the man at the counter about why I was there.  (more…)

You Know You’ve Missed Her

Remember Lacey Conner? Have you missed her? Well catch one of the reruns of Sunday’s episode of Rock of Love 2. She graced the screen once more as a rather hyper roller derby girl. But as much as I looked forward to seeing her again, I was a little disappointed. Besides seeing Lacey and her teammates pummel a baby doll, she didn’t do anything else crazy.

Oh, and if you haven’t been watching this season of Rock of Love, you really should. It makes for some amazingly awful TV.

One Word Says it All: Awesome

Who can resist a little competition- Guitar Hero competition?

That’s right, folks: On Feb. 4 and 11 at The Industry Bar on Beltline Road, there is the Guitar Hero III tournament:

Face off against Guitar icon Slash and others in insane boss battles featuring original tracks recorded exclusively for Guitar Hero® III: Legends of Rock. Take your skills against other Guitar Hero® players, while competing for door prizes.

Awesome.

Re: Owen Wilson Will So Love Me- Final Chapter

While reviewing the last of the photos from the Nobelity dinner I came across this one, the perfect close. See the look I’ve got here? That is my, “this isn’t going too well” face.

Bob Schneider tried to appear half way concerned when I told him that I had banned his music from my car because of some not-so-ok lyrics. Maybe he got over it way quickly because I let him know that I’m willing to try again since I understand more recent hits are appropriate for the non-Austin crowd. august-27-2007-194_edited.jpgHe so did not have a nice look on his face when I mentioned the Park Cities. Anyway, I wouldn’t call this one a bonding experience but he is a great musician. Just not a Parkie type.

I’m willing to bet he won’t be a new subscriber to People Newspapers anytime soon.

Staff Changes in the Newsroom

It’s a day of change in the editorial department.

Effective Thursday, Scott Farrell will be our new managing editor. You may know Scott as a sports guy, but he’s just as much a news junkie. He’s been with us three years, and he has years more experience beyond that, including a previous stint at Park Cities People, and time at The Dallas Morning News. I’m excited about what he can bring to the front pages.

Also as of Thursday, Chuck Cox will become our new sports editor. Chuck has been our Oak Cliff reporter. Prior to working here, he spent 10 years as a sports reporter, including the last six at the daily Denton Record Chronicle. It’s wonderful that we have someone with his level of experience on staff ready to fill this important role.

We will be hiring a new Oak Cliff reporter, in addition to the Lakewood/Lake Highlands reporter that we were already seeking.

New Tool for Real Estate Search

In case you missed Friday’s print version of Overheard, we ran a story about a new real estate search engine called Roost.com. The idea is pretty interesting in a why-didn’t-I-think-of-that kind of way, but the new site has a few glitches (you real estate junkies will see what I mean). If you’re on the market for a new home in Dallas, you should check it out.

Re: Owen Wilson Will So Love Me

The Nobelity dinner was such fun. Think Austin music scene meets rich hippie granola at the Four Seasons and you’re practically there.

august-27-2007-192_edited.jpgI was thrilled to meet Sarah Bird. She is everything I hoped, now I’m an even bigger fan. Sadly, she told me that she is now going to be writing the Texas Monthly column only every other month, sharing the space with Kinky Friedman who I’m not a huge fan of now that I’ve met him. He was with a girl that he introduced as “Sugar Butt.” Sugar Butt looked unkept at best and twenty at the oldest. (more…)

Rats! Run for Your Lives, Blame Demoliton?

This gem in the DMN links the rat problem in Preston Hollow with the vermin scattering during home demolition. I have to say, the many horror stories of rats scurrying along power lines and hanging out in backyards of the Park Cities don’t seem to have anything to do with teardowns. Apparently UP & HP have regulations requiring rodent control in demolitions, but no one can say for sure if there has really been a change in the rat population since the regulations went into effect. One woman in the article said she

“requested we do an ordinance that would hold the building owner accountable if there were rodents.”

That doesn’t seem fair, and some people are crying foul. Rats are everywhere. Just like cockroaches.
