A couple of weeks ago I mentioned to Jason that I had heard two different Parkie women in the same day use the word “thus” in casual conversation. It sounded a bit misplaced, forced even. Then today, another local lady said it. Is this a trend? It’s just weird.
I don’t think it’s that weird. I say “hence” pretty frequently and it works well for me. Now if they had each said, “Verily I say…” or “Forsooth”, well, that’s a whole different story!
I like “thus” by I don’t like “thusly” which I have also heard and is just wrong.
Must be Hockadaisies or some of the more educated. Kinda like you using the word “parkie”, you must not be from here!! That is really annoying. And I think your readers would appreciate it if you would talk about Armstrong as well as Bradfield, hence everyone would feel included, thus making for more readership. Maybe you should do a PCP Kids, and those who have kids would be all over that. IJS
Dear Gmom, Thanks for the suggestion. My stepson goes to Armstrong and I’ve written quite a bit about the happenings there. If you have a Bradfield scoop, let me know.
Note to Merritt and Gmom…isn’t “Parkie” a word used to describe any resident of the Park Cities? I didn’t think there was any school affiliation with the term. Deal or no deal?
MK, Two different points that gmom was making. 1)Ha ha you don’t know not to use the word “parkie.” 2) You don’t know how to grab a larger audience by expanding your topics. The overall theme, I believe, was “you don’t know what you’re doing and gmom is smarter.”
And I’m totally sad because of it.
MK and M…. Parkie, to me, is like “townie”. And No MK it is not used to describe everyone in the PC. Maybe there are too many of us baby boomers who think it is offensive, and you young whippersnappers are so impressed with the PC you want everyone to know where you live.
Not cool! M, no I don’t think I am smarter, but expanding your topics couldn’t hurt. Not smarter, just lived longer! Don’t be sad, isn’t this what a Blog is about?
Note to gmom: don’t I qualify as a baby boomer if I was born in 1958? I remember the Cold War, Kennedy’s assasination and my brother’s lottery number from the Vietnam War draft. I’ve been a Parkie for 15 years and to me, Merritt’s just describing the people who live in our neighborhood. I think your comment about “young whippersnappers are so impressed with the PC that we want everyone to know where we live” is sort of strange, given that we’re on a Park Cities People blog. If she expanded her topics, then it wouldn’t be geared towards this community, right? I mean, aren’t Park Cities residents who this paper is written for? Maybe if we lived in Oak Lawn, we’d be Oakies…or Bluffies, if we lived in Bluff View. Finally, my license says I live in Dallas. If I was really eager to impress (and look like a total dork), it would read University Park.
how can i get an hp dl?
I dislike “Parkie,” but it doesn’t make me want to puke like “The Bubble” does. (And if credentials are required for an opinion [they're not], except for brief excursions during college and law school, I’ve lived in or around HP or UP since I was born in 1957.)
Dan Quayle may have the answer to this.
