Re: UP Auction

This just in from “Soonermom.”

Girl, You are too quick with that d#*m Crackberry!!

Sister, you have no idea.

UP Elementary Auction

The auction is online and closes at 10:00 tonight. I’m running a tough race with some eager parent using the name “Sunshine.” My bid is up to $210 for the highly coveted “teacher for a day” for my first grade daughter, Addiemae. She is 6 and her goal in life is to get her hands on a punk classmate that called her friend a “stinky skunk.” Can you blame her? I’m willing to go to $250. Developing.

Re: HPHS Sounding Board

I actually know and have worked on projects with several of these women and will without any hesitation say that they are very smart, hard working and astute people.  I’m not exactly sure what the purpose of the Sounding Board is but if it is to help the high school communicate better with parents, address issues of high schoolers and be the liaisons between the school and the community, then I think it’s a great idea and they could not have picked a more effective and well-qualified group. Kudos to HPHS for getting it started, and kudos to these women for signing up for this gig!

Re: HPHS Sounding Board

This just in from an Overheardian re: the meeting tomorrow:

That is like tomorrow, right? If any working parents want to go they better reschedule all of their meetings really quickly. If you get the address of the super top secret location let us know. Do we need a password to get in?

HPHS Sounding Board

This e-mail was sent out today announcing the HPHS Sounding Board. Where is the MIS Sounding Board? I have an item for discussion.

The Highland Park High School is pleased to announce the formation of the HPHS Sounding Board.
Members for the 2007-2008 school year include Susan Banowsky, Cordelia Boone, Emily Deutscher, Mary Lou Gibbons, Kathy Kelley, Cindy Kerr, Babs Lawrence, Lucy McDonald, Connie O’Neill, Martha Sheeder, Mary Taylor and Zazelle Wingo.
Meetings are generally scheduled for the 4th Tuesday of the month at 9:00 a.m. Remaining meetings for the fall semester include the following dates: October 30th and November 27th.
If you have a subject that you would like to bring to the Sounding Board for discussion, please contact one of the board members.
I bet these women, the board members, (looks like all of them are women) are volamoms really sweet.
Oh, and one last thing. Where are the meetings held? See, you forgot to tell us that part.

Baptists Get With it, Consider Electing Woman

The Dallas-based Baptist General Convention is thisclose to electing a woman, Joy Fenner of Garland, as president. Her opponent is a man from West Texas. The DMN says:

Dr. Lowrie, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Canyon, Texas, praises Ms. Fenner and insists he’s not running against her because she’s a woman.

Progressive. It goes on to say that

the BGCT would make another positive statement for diversity by giving such a qualified woman the presidency.

That’s the thing: She is qualified. (more…)

A Lot of Walking

The Breast Cancer 3 Day was this weekend. Basically, people raise money and then walk 3 days (20 miles a day) for the Susan G Komen for the Cure. It finished up yesterday at SMU. I had completely forgot about it until I went to White Rock on Sunday and saw a lot of women and a few men decked out in pink and walking around with multiple water bottles.

The best thing I saw was how encouraging everyone was. Bikers, runners, and walkers that passed those participating would shout at, “Good job. Keep it up. You guys are awesome.” It may sound a little mushy, but it was really moving.

So here’s my shout out to all the walkers, even our own education reporter, Sarah Henry, who I believe is recuperating today after walking 60 miles.

Good job, everyone!

Exxon Valdez Runs Aground on Beverly?

Maybe the Friends of Armstrong Elementary were right? Cassie Clark followed up on Kersten’s inquiry this morning:

There was a wreck… a lady was taken to the hospital with minor shoulder injuries. Also, there was an oil spill that needed to be cleaned up.

Still awaiting word on where exactly the wreck was…

UPDATE: Of course Beverly hasn’t become part of a shipping lane. The oil came from the two cars that wrecked at Beverly and Preston.

My Alma Mater Gets National Football Buzz

So SMU fired Phil Bennett, as sports editor Scott Farrell told us on Friday would happen if the team lost this weekend. Mustangs fans don’t have much to cheer about this season.

Well, how about a little Division III action? Trinity University stunned its rivals for the SCAC Title, Millsaps College, on Saturday. This is one amazing play. Go Tigers.

Monday Morning Traffic

At 7:50 or so this morning, there was police activity around Preston and Beverly.  Fairfax and Beverly were blocked off between Douglas and Preston causing lots of traffic delays.  Does anyone know what was going on?

Re: Habitat Hat

Here are the long awaited photos of the habitat hat. People, I tell you, the picture does not do the hat justice because you can’t see the lake and detailed groundcover over the rim. You’ll have to take my word for it, it’s stunning. (more…)
