This morning comes another e-mail from the “Friends of Armstrong Elementary” that seeks to rally folks to attend next Monday’s Highland Park Town Council meeting. On the heels of Saturday’s terrible accident, they want the council to reconsider its decision not to make Beverly Drive the primary detour route during the Mockingbird reconstruction.
They say they’d even be happy if the council would close the three blocks of Beverly near Armstrong Elementary. The accident took place a block south of the school on Byron. I’ve heard no update on the condition of Mrs. Decherd, but of course everyone wishes her and her family the best.
So it seems a strange time to be bringing up traffic routes again, but here we are. The alternative routes Friends of Armstrong Elementary is pushing are Lovers Lane and taking Hillcrest/Abbott down to Armstrong. We’ll see next week, I suppose, if any of this moves the council to reconsider its decision.
Lovers Lane? Well that runs by UP Elementary. Close Beverly for three blocks near Armstrong? What about the people on Princeton? The way these people are acting - as though Beverly Drive were a park and kids played in their front yards all day long and there was never any traffic - maybe they should just gate the Park Cities. Then nobody could drive through.
Why are the Armstrong kids any different than all of the other kids in the Park Cities? Bradfield is on Mockingbird and they seem to be fine and UP is on Lovers Lane and they are just fine. Armstrong is NEAR Beverly but not even ON it. We just need to all pay close attention and help our kids remember traffic safety. This is a temporary thing. The accident Saturday was truly unfortunate, but it reminds us that ACCIDENTS can happen anywhere and to anyone.
Of course they would be happy if the council would close their blocks! Wouldn’t we all love to have our blocks closed to all but ourselves? The “Friends of Armstrong” need to get over themselves! It’s awfully elitist to suggest the detour be moved from NEAR Armstrong to right in front of University Park Elementary. UP has already suffered through having their school right in the middle of construction for over a year. Is this a “save my kids but endanger yours instead” argument? Or is this a “your kids are used to all the construction” kind of argument?
Those of use that drop off our kids at MIS and then cut North up HIllcrest also know that all the kids east of Hillcrest going to UP cross at Lover’s and HIllcrest. It is usually a zoo at that intersection in the mornings.
why r we widending mockingbird? i forget.
