The Highland Park staple is celebrating its 50th year with an anniversary party Saturday. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. to open the remodeled space, and raffles will take place throughout the day. Happy anniversary!
I’ve got a column coming up in this week’s paper about Southlake Carroll’s football situation, and how it compares to Highland Park’s. Not in terms of wins and losses, but the overall experience of going to a game at each school. I attended the Carroll-Lake Highlands game last Friday, and was quite impressed. I’ll save the key points for Friday, but here’s at least one off-beat observation on both team’s stadiums.
Highlander Stadium (Love Field) and Dragon Stadium (D/FW) each have outstanding views of the area’s two major airports. The sightlines are great, especially for an aviation buff like me who enjoys watching the planes during timeouts. The difference is Highlander is a safe distance away from Love. Dragon, not so much. Walking to the press box last Friday, I swear a guy in seat 16H waved at me out of a 757 on final approach into D/FW. I kid you not - you can see the passengers’ faces those planes are so low.
Check out the comments on “Football in the Groin,” and you’ll see that Mr. Harry Hunsicker won today’s Simpsons trivia contest. His prize is a chance to write a column for Park Cities People’s editorial page. He can contact senior editor Glenn Arbery for details.
I was up in the press box at SMU watching this play develop Saturday. Thank goodness it was an overthrown 40-yard lob pass that hit Jeremy. SMU quarterback Justin Willis has a strong enough arm that a 10-yard dart into the end zone might have left Jeremy seeking worker’s comp today.
That said, way to go, Jeremy, for taking one, and nearly two, for the team.
Hey for the record it did hit me in the stomach which I am very thankful for. I am glad the working out I have done lately has not taken that away but has made me faster.
I’ve never seen Jeremy move that fast. Can we give an award for photo of the month to someone at another news organization?
Anyone know whose film beat out Hans Moleman’s masterpiece to win the first Springfield Film Festival on The Simpsons?
Well, to paraphrase Homer Simpson, who cast the deciding vote: My post today about the National Merit Semifinalists had heart, but “Football in the Groin” has football in the groin.
Enjoy as our staff photographer Jeremy Chesnutt proves that photojournalism is a contact sport, from last Saturday’s SMU vs. North Texas game. (He claims it got his stomach instead.)

Our web gurus are working to fix it so that you’ll see the number of comments that have been made for each post in the “posted by” line. I’ve been told it could take several days to fix. That way you don’t have to click on each post to know if there are comments there.
I can tell you that “Smarty Pants” and “Frisco Doesn’t Like the Bubble,” have both been commented on today.
If you’re looking to read what fellow Overheardians have to say, click on the headline of an entry to see the page where comments are listed. Comments don’t show up on the home page. So click on those headlines, people, and tell us what’s on your minds. (But remember, if you can’t say anything nice … OK, wishful thinking.)
The Dallas Arboretum sent a release today about something called “The Amazing Chocolate Tree” coming to Dallas. They had me at “chocolate.” Jump for details. (more…)
Graduating early is like leaving the party at 10. You miss the best parts. Of course, you don’t want to stick around too long, either.
Why would anyone want to leave Highland Park a year early? This is the golden year, kids. Don’t skip your senior year in high school. Graduating at 17 instead of 18 is cool, but the real world isn’t the greatest. Just ask your parents.
A school-district communicating Overheardian called to point out that the full version of the press released noted that Bryan Hayslett graduated early last year. So he may be sleeping in, but it’s not the reason he missed the photo.
In my excitement to rush this breaking news to the blog, I neglected to read carefully. I humbly apologize.

These bright, shining kids are the latest Highland Park High School students to be named National Merit Semifinalists. Eighteen of them this year. But only 17 of them made the photo. Did you sleep in, Bryan Hayslett? Congratulations to all for performing well on the PSAT.
Full release from the school district after the jump.

Merritt reports that University Park Police are monitoring the handicapped parking space at UP Elementary this morning, for the first time that she can remember. Guess she won’t be able to point out any scofflaws today.
