Thanks for posting this on the blog. This is such a difficult issue and I am curious how it will all play out. I know it must have been embarrassing for this young lady to go to school today - but her mother insisted she go to school and “face the music”. If more parents were like her, our abuse rate among school children should plummet. It is important to note, that in the Dallas Morning News Metro section today, this young lady was featured as one of the 2007-08 Student Voices. This is an accomplished young lady who can take this tragedy and hopefully write about her experience and prevent others from her mistake. The issues she mentions in the introduction (substance abuse, bullying in schools) are real, and HP kids are facing them today. I lift her and her family up in prayer as they fight the intense social pressure to run or hide from this. I am proud of this family.

EDITORIAL: A Wrenching Decision
Being a parent sometimes demands the toughest choicesRichard and Angela Watkins love their daughter. So they sent her to jail last weekend.
Rather than take custody of the intoxicated 17-year-old after the Highland Park Department of Public Safety busted her for underage drinking, they opted to have officers handcuff her, cart her off, and lock her up for the night.
Sending a child away, forcing her to stand alone as she’s incarcerated — even for just one night, even in the relative safety of the Highland Park jail — must be a wrenching act for any parent. But the Watkins felt they had to “do the right thing,” as the mother told one of our editors.
We applaud their decision.

Doesn’t it seem like just yesterday that the Picts were fighting the Northumbrians at the Battle of Dunnichen, or, as I like to call it, the Battle of Nechtansmere? Well, it wasn’t. It was in the year 685.
And the Highlander Band will reenact (presumably with music) the glorious victory of (SPOILER ALERT) the Picts at the Tom Landry Classic tomorrow. For full details, (more…)
